I've been trying unsuccesfully to convert an XVID (two files) into one single mpg (either vcd, or dvd), adding subtitles to it (both ssa, and srt) and the source file has AC3 Audio.
Doesn't work!!!
I installed the Xvid codec, and VirtualDub seemed to work fine, and it did add the subtitles. Frameserving seemed to work, too (into TmpegENC).
However, the main issue is with the Audio, as frameserving (albeit, not recommended) didn't work, and audio extraction (using VirtualDub) didn't work either.
I've even tried re-encoding the audio (with BeSweetGUI) but didn't manage with it (it couldn't handle the audio part of a video file, needed to extract first, but couldn't ).
Any suggestions? Maybe I'm using the wrong tools? Is this operation too complex - should I break it down further into smaller steps? (treat the Video first, then subs, then audio?)
Thanks!

If you select direct stream copy under audio in virtualdub, I'd be surprised if you couldn't get the audiotrack if you tell VDub to Save WAV
Then rename the extracted audio (that VDub calls .wav) back to .AC3.
Run ac3fix on this ac3 to remove the wav header that VDub seems to add, even if it's ac3.
Convert to wav with headac3he.
Then in VirtualDub, load the AVI as usual, then select wav audio to use your newly converted wav. Play (with VDub) at different points to check for sync issues.
Frame serve as usual, in 2 passes if you want to make it 2 mpegs.
