    Not exactly - look at Star Trek: The Motion Picture - there was the original theatrical cut, then the "director's cut" released on DVD. Same for The Abyss, original theatrical cut, then James Cameron released the "director's cut" a while back. Same for ID4, theatrical cut, then the director's cut. A prime example would be the Star Wars trilogy - they just called them "special editions", though.
