  1. Just a newbie-ish question.

Vdub won't let me append one DivX to another because they have different sampling rates (I can't remember the details here at work). Anyone know how to do this?

    You don't.

To work with them, they must have the same sample rate (I'm assuming you're talking about audio).

You must 1st decode/demux/export to uncompressed wave,
then use a Sample Rate Converter app (see <--) to change to correct SR,
then recompress to desired bitrate and format (one that will match the other),
    then remux with video.

Only then will you be able to join the files.

  3. I was afraid of that. I was hoping there would be a quick and dirty way to change the sampling freq..

    *sigh* Such is life...

I think you can do it directly in VirtualDub, but you will still have to save each segment then join them together. (It's effectively the same process as Cornucopia described) Try this:

Open the first AVI, set the Video processing to "Direct stream copy" and set Audio processing to "Full".

Select "Audio->conversion" and pick the most appropriate audio format.

Now save the AVI to a new filename.

Repeat with the second AVI, selecting exactly the same audio settings.

    Now join them.

you could probably just make each one a vcd in tmpenc and then join them, after that change them anyway you want
