  1. doing a back-up of Armageddon R1 with TMPGenc and found something strange. DVD2AVI and IFOEdit says that the movie is 4:3, but its shot in widescreen (2.35.1)

    Why is this?

  2. I don't know that particular version, but it's not something daft like they've formatted the widescreen presentation in a 4:3 frame, ie it's not anamorphic ?

  3. Actually it's because it is a widescreen letterbox format

  4. I've got more info from amazon.com concerning that release:

    Edition Details:
    • Encoding: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. This DVD will probably NOT be viewable in other countries. Read more about DVD formats.)
    • Color, Closed-captioned, Widescreen
    • Theatrical trailer(s), TV spot(s)
    • Music video: "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith
    • Widescreen letterbox format
    • ASIN: B00000G3PA

    Widescreen Review:
Picture Quality: 4 (5 is the highest rating)
The dual-layered DVD is not anamorphic, but exhibits good image quality. Images are sharp and detailed with natural color fidelity. Sadly, the DVD was not anamorphically enhanced nor authored using a component master, and digital coding artifacts are apparent as is image enhancement. With all the special effects, the clarity would be dramatically enhanced, but Disney evidently has a policy not to release in the anamorphic widescreen format. The picture is framed at 2.32:1.
