  1. can someone please suggest me how to make a highly compressed asf file from mpg or dat files?
I could find info on how to convert it into divx but not how to convert to asf. Basically I am looking at compressing mpeg/dat files so that they can be uploaded on a web site.
    Please help anyone.

Windows Media uses the Advanced System Format (.asf), so you could convert the movie to .wmv. This is just the file extension for audio + video encoded to the Advanced System Format with the Microsoft codec (all other codecs use the .asf file extension). You can convert .mpg files to .wmv with Windows Media Encoder. Windows Movie Maker will also convert to .wmv, but I would choose WME over WMM.
