  1. I wanted some opinions on getting rid of macroblocks completely. I captured off VHS to 352x480 with MJPEG with a setting of 19. I used TMPGEnc to encode the file with 2000 as the min, 4000 as the average and 5000 as the max. There is an explosion in the video and even with these settings it's still kind of noticeable in it. Do I need to get crazy with the bitrates and do something like 2000 min, 6000 avg., 8000 max? I thought 352x480 capped out at about 5000? Others have said it's 4000 is where it caps at. I'm planning on moving this onto DVD when I get it all correct.

I ran these video files through Bitrate Viewer and the most anyone of them got up to for the peak value was about 4800. So, I think if I up the max, it's not going to do any good, since it's not even hitting 5000 on the max. I guess what I have is the best it can do.

  2. what kind of motion detect settings are you using? a quick explosion might be relying on the bitrate from the previous frames and didn't adjust quickly enough. your bitrates seem adequate for half resolution, i don't think bitrate is the problem.

    Search Comp PM
Using TMPGEnc goto the GOP Structure tab.

Select : Force Picture Setting then press [setting]

Locate the frames with the explosion and manually set the bitrate.

A real pain since you will need to reencode but before you do the who movie just do a portion of it using [source range] under the "Advanced" Tab.
