  1. Hi, I wanted to cap a movie, i want to cap it LITERALLY the best way possible. i need to know the best ways for satellite, cable, digital cable, analouge and the rest. Is capping them with a stand alone dvd recoreder the best way? if not tell me the best ways possible for quality , sound , picture wise.

    Thanks

  2. based on what you have written, YOu will be best served buying a standalone dvd record. Recommend the e-20 or later models. Look on the left and see what others think of their players.

I disagree. You don't want a stand alone unit.

Buy a ATI All In Wonder 9700 Pro Cap Card for your PC and follow the site guides. The stand alone units will NOT give you the menu options that can really add to a vid cap project.

ATI caps are excellent, especially if you want to use "video soap" filters for low quality sources like old VHS tapes.

get a 35mm print of the film and a Telecine system.

    best. capture. ever.

or maybe "best" is in the eye (and wallet) of the beholder....

What is it with the $$$ ATI AIW cards?

Get a dedicated capture card. The cheaper the better! Why? It's all done in software, so you can litterally do anything to capture. Hardware based cards introduce losses in the capture before you have even encoded. Capture in lossless huffyuv, edit, filter, encode.

You want one of the BTxxx chipsets.

dps reality or avid system would be best ... or if you have a d-beta , use a sdi card .. or just use the original digital files ...

Telecine system is second best -- film scanning is best (and bloody expensive)

    @Gazorgan

You make my point for me :P With the ATI card you can capture in mpeg2 since half of the work is being done by the hardware encoder and the rest is taken care of by the software. This way you can shave hours off of a DVD project by (transcoding) while you capture.

The quality is GREAT if your source is good and you have a powerful system like a 2.8 ghz with 1 gig ram. No dropped frames.

Of course I like the mutimedia features and TV guides that basically turn my system into a tivo and allows me to record shows while I'm at work. The ATI 9700 has 8 pixel rendering piplines, Vidoesoap filters, thruview, and much more that would take too long to list.

And hey, if I want to use huffyuv, I can. I can capture to avi and encode later if I want. ATI AIW is well worth the bucks spent, although I have nothing against shopping on the cheap.

    BJ_M -

can you elaborate on the difference? I was under the impression that telecine is scanning the film and digitizing it...

one uses a ccd camera and the other uses a laser and is much slower but higher resolution output (can be much higher) .. a laser method is how also a neg is made from digital files .. going the other way .. at least for high end films ..
