  1. I want to convert an asf video to mpg (I think I have to convert to avi first, then to mpg).

I have been trying to use "AsfTools 3.1", but when I try to convert to avi, the resulting file will not display video - I only get audio.

Is there a way to do this correctly, or am I just screwed??

doom9.org has a great tool to do this. Converts the ASF back to AVI video. Downside is it won't do DRM material. I think we have it on this site as well.

Do you have the latest version? Some of the new WME9 codecs aren't supported in older versions.

    Digital Rights Material

If it has the 'copyrighted' bit set, it won't let you convert it, even if you own the rights to it. This is to avoid being sued by M$. That way you can't take the HD version of some new DVD's( you do know that there are WMV's on some DVD's, like Terminator 2, now in HD resolution, although what you are supposed to do with them...) and convert the WMV to a HD version in say....DivX.

You can also try TMPEG, I've had some luck converting to MPG from ASF.

I agree w/ dower. I've downloaded quite a few asf's and have had minimal problems converting them to mpg's with tmpgenc.

  7. Use TMPGEnc v2.59. It can also convert from wmv.

  8. Failing tmpgenc convert it to wmv with windows movie maker then tmpgenc will accpet it. I have had to do this before and it works fine.
