Okay Gees, thanks, I'll take you up on that, thanks.
I'll PM you now with my mail address, and we'll post the results/links here to show what we've accomplished.
I'd like to amend the layout slightly if we can, and maybe lose some of the garish (sp?) colours.
Do you know anywhere I can pick up some pre-designed link buttons?
And no, I don;'t want them to be spinning football/soccer balls, I'm not that cheesy
    Thanks again,
    Will

No, it should be in the milford folder, ie.

Now listen, it's not long ago I had three websites all running and all in the same folder, I've only just learnt how to create individual folders and upload to them.
I know, I should have gone one step further and added folders within folders to my milford site, but it's too big and too late now!

    Will,

Have you started play for the season?

My g'daughter's first game was today, they won 2-0, not impressive by US standards, but they overbooted, underbooted about 9 goal shots. Not to take away from their goalie, she was pretty darn good for an 11 year old.

Man, I am loving the new season. 3 days a week all took up. Who's number 9?

There are loads of sites with pre-designed buttons. Probably best for you to find what you like and let me know.

Actually the buttons themselves are fine - they're OK. You probably just want better placement of them and they'd look different to what you have now. :c)

But if you do want a change, there's tons to pick from. :c)

Actually, Will, I prefer no folders at all. Unless you had an extremely deep site with tons of differing graphics or something.

I know that goes against what people are told, but, trust me, when you go to make changes, or updates, it's much easier to have it all in one place.

If you have just this one site going, that's what I'd recommend.

AND - we need to get you some meta tags in there - so engines can find you and your team! :c)

So, think of any related words and start making a list and checking it twice. :c)

Yeah, won two and lost one, although I've been out of the loop for a year and haven't played since my son was born
I'm due back training this week
I used to be a winger, No. 7 but my waist line increased and speed decreased and I took up the left-back position, which I plan to win back in the next few weeks.
Trouble is, weekends are too important with the family now, Thursday night training is fine but Sunday's are pretty much a write off....
....away at 9am and back at 2pm and my son is getting ready for bed at 6:30pm so I'm yet to decide whether I'll make a full go of it yet.
Edit: I can't really see me giving up family time on a weekend to be honest as I only see him two hours or so through the week.
I'll certainly train and keep the website up and running thiugh, I can't let go completely.
Plus, and now is a good a time as any to annouce it....
....my wife is expecting another baby so come the March 2004 they'll be another member of the Will Hay family running around.
In fact, that's given me another idea for my signature

I'm guessing you're okay with me posting this here pacmania?
    It's a great post

    1) The average internet user allows 10 seconds for a page to load before they will leave. That is 10 seconds by the way on dial up and I was experiencing that sort of time on my cable connection.

    2) Never use image based navigation on your site unless you provide a text based alternative. A significant portion of users browse the internet with images switched off therefore your site becomes useless.

    3) A site (unless heavily content based) should have all it's pages accessible to the user in 5 or less clicks. Any more and the average internet user will leave.

    4) Intro pages are a no-no for most sites. It just adds to the number of clicks and most people will react negatively to the idea that the first page they see on the site isnt the home page.

    5) At least add title tags to your page. If you are trying to make people pay for a page at least give them some level of professionalism.

    6) 'Cutesy' graphics aren't good for a professional site. They may seem cool to have an exploding barrel or some other equally awesome graphic on your site but all it does is discredit the information. Images are best used sparingly.

    7) Do a SWOT analysis. If your competitors (DVDRHelp, Doom9) are offering their information for free what would make your visitors pay for your site unless you are providing something different.

8 ) Do a copyright/trademark/registered business name search if you plan on making money from the site. Most companies who register copyrights don't mind a little personal homepage using their trademarks but when you start trying to profit from them, that is a different situation.

    9) Don't bother with a guestbook. All it does is clog up your site with useless comments that are either (a) made up by you or friend of you who help give 'credit' to the site or (b) made up by someone with too much time on their hand and have the potential to warn others that sites like DVDRHelp and Doom9 exist.

    10) If you are going to have a "Last updated" message on your site at least make it current. Your current one, "August 10, 2003" isnt exactly going to draw in the visitors. Even if you haven't updated since then change the message to a current date.

    11) Don't have a counter. No one wants to see that you have X number of visitors unless that number is a huge amount. Also don't use a fake counter either, most people can tell.

    12) Choose one or two colours for your fonts/backgrounds and only use them throughout your site.

    13) Load your page into frontpage (if you don't already use it) and turn on the option to hide your frame borders.

    14) Keep some consistency to your pages. Build (or download) one template and customise it to each individual page. That way the site doesn't look like it was thrown together by cut and pasting.

    15) If you want to make money on this venture you are going to have to get to users before they see sites like DVDRHelp and Doom9. This is virtually impossible however here's a tip. Read up some on how to optimise your pages for search engines, get prepared to pay Google and other search engines money to have a sponsored listing and/or start making alot of friends with webpages so they can link to you and draw your rating up.

If I can remember anything else from my eCommerce course I will post again.
