Nothing I encode using mencoder ends up with an audio track!

This is true with any mode (MPG4, XviD, or DivX3) and with any audio setting (MP3, MP2, AC3, passthrough). The sources are DV/DVCPRO-NTSC which encode fine using ffmpeg.

    Is this a known problem?

  2. For DV files you should name the file with a ".dv" extension.

Changing the extension to .dv didn't work.

But re-exporting the source from QuickTime as a DV-DVPRO-NTSC .mov with uncompressed audio does. I can only assume the original sources (created in Premiere and exported without compression) had something in the audio track mencoder didn't like but ffmpeg can handle. Can't imagine what it is.

Mencoder's output for this project (dance performances) is excellent - considerably better than ffmpeg's or QT's MPEG4.

As an aside, ffmpegX Progress's progress bar doesn't update when encoding with mencoder.
