WMP works in and out of each upgrade MS sends down. Suggest you try to use PowerDVD or WinDVD.

I suggest WinDVD for DVDs. For quicktime use, well quicktime. For EVERYTHING else I use Videolan, it misses a few features but plays everything for me perfect everytime.

As far as you Media player problem, try downloading and installing/reinstalling their little codec pack and see if that helps. If your using XP try rolling back the computer with the restore utility to a time when it did work correctly.

  4. I'd bet good money on your only problem is you do not have the correct codec installed.

Does this problem occur with both mpeg1 & mpeg2, as well as several avi codecs? Or just one type?

Don't know if this will help....but sounds similar to a problem ive been having. I have just about every codec ive ever heard of and reciently ive been having problems getting vid on my stuff. I checked the properties of the vids i was having prob with and couldnt find any video data in it. I opened it in virtual dub saved it as avi and the new file had video. If anyone knows why this worked tell me...maybe it will work for you..

    and1,
what does Mplayer look like when it's playing? does it have a box the right size for the video, which remains black, or does it just look like it does when playing an audio-only file (like an .mp3 or .wav)
Oh, i should ask which version you use? i -always- use the old version of mediaplayer (click start, run, type mplayer2) as it's less problematic.

If you're getting a box the right size for the video but black, try going into directX and diabling direc draw, restart. this will probably work, but perform badly. re enable direct draw and restart.

to get into the directX setup, click start, run and type dxdiag .

Try WMP clasic (in the tools section), it works great plus it's free.
