    I want to make and VCD/SVCD from a whole bunch of MOV files.

    Is there a trial or free software that will let me convert the files?

    If I can get it into AVI then I can use my normal methods to create the CD

    I tried Media Studio Pro 6 but it keeps failing half way through.

    The files all play for around 3 minutes or so and I have plenty of temp/hard disk space.

    Eovideo will do that. There's a 30 day trial. You'll need quicktime installed for it to work.

    Get the free version of TMPGEnc and also download the QuickTime plug for it from

    http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/4942/svcd.html

    You can then use TMPEnc wizard to convert MOV to VCD compliant mpeg1

    As well as EOVideo or TMPGenc with it's Quicktime plugin there's also the freeware RAD Video Tools.
