Toast 6 re-encodes my mpeg1 before burning it! My video doesn't need to be re-encoded! They say it looks better with re-encoding due to higher bitrate, but that doesn't matter with VCD. I encode everything first with probably alot better encoder than toast has. It takes too long to burn a VCD now with toast 6 wanting to re-encode every time before burning. Toast 5 burns my vcds perfect w/o re-encoding! Does anybody know how to disable this feature? Toast 5 won't be around much longer, since it won't even run on 10.3! HELP!

agreed... this is the most annoying thing I have ever seen.
I have not found any workaround yet other than to use MMB instead.
What the hell is/was Roxio thinking?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? -
not to worry. yes toast 5.0 wont work on 10.3 but im sure there will be updates to MMB and Firestarter for 10.3 such that they will allow burning in 10.3.
The important thing to remember for those looking to go to 10.3
Its going to be like the jump from 10.1 to 10.2 *new system architecture means a great system but may not imply a "smooth" transfer.
It has yet to be seen, but im sure there are things that will need updating (possibly even toast 6!) -
I think Toast 6 reencodes the video is because the video that you are importing didn't meet the specifications of VCDs. I might be right or wrong, but Toast 6 seems to be "picky" even when most of us encodes the video with other softwares.

no, i think it does it no matter what.
I had a SVCD standard mpeg2 file and it reencoded it!
why!?!?
who knows -
I think that Toast 6 wants to encode the video by using it's "own" encoder.
If Toast 6 is like this, then WHAT DA HELL!!!
I'll try to talk or write an email to the to the makers of Toast 6. -
its better to convert your mpeg to bin/cue and then select copy mode... and advanced settings then you can drop the cue file in and burn that.. no re-encoding and its the best svcd option for those who cant use missing media burner.. the same can be done with vcd as well.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving all these opportunities behind. -
Hi!
Well, you can also use the good old "VCDbuilder" to author your VCD/SVCD. It will generate xa.img files. Toast should burn them without problem, as it won't see it's video and therefore won't try to reencode.
But I agree, it's a stupid idea (if done on purpose) from Roxio. Seems we don't have the choice...yet.
And also I agree, MMB is getting better and better. Firestarter also, although it has less features.
Roxio, it seems you did a nice work with Toast 6, I think nobody can deny that, but too many annoying details... Like also, not being able to choose your background images in the DVD/VCD/SVCD authoring. Please make Toast 6 more flexible...and I'll buy it !iMac 400 DV (So what!) - 512 Mo RAM - HD 50 Go - Panther -
Thanks for all the usefull comments, seems that it is indeed a obvious flaw in Toast 6. I wonder if they will come out with a small updater like 5.2.2 to make toast 5 work in 10.3? Then we could use both. All my video is encoded first, but still wants to re-encode, sometimes it forces me to burn as pal vcd? but I can go to toast 5 and burn it, and its def not pal, weird?

I got these from the Roxio forum:
I don't think Toast is re-encoding the file. I know it says Encoding, but what is happening is demux/mux, menu creation, and Toast checks the file to make sure it is okay. The video/audio shouldn't change.
Toast 5 VCD were out of spec. Toast 6 VCD are not. If the files get re-encode it's because they are out of spec. I don't know of anyway to skip it. I still don't think the Video is be re-encoded though. It just remuxes and demux the files. Not much you can do if the file is out of spec. If you want a Valid VCD/DVD then it's the price you have to pay i guess. -
I tried to make an SVCD using Toast 6 but was perplexed as to why it was re-encoding a file already set to SVCD spec. I realized two things about Toast 6: my SVCD-ready file didnt have SVCD headers so Toast 6 didnt like that .. and also it expected my audio bitrate to be 224kbps, not the 192kbps I used. I found in my home
ocuments:Roxio Converted Items folder that it only re-encoded the audio, not the video.
The key to Toast 6 seems to be finding out what Roxio considers to be a file within spec, then set your external encoders to Roxio's expectations. And also write them email to rip them a new one for not making disc creation more flexible. -

But it will become rather tedious to have to create bin/cue files or have toast re-encode all my existing MPEG files i would ever want to put onto VCD. -

and if a person simply relates their experience with adc beta/preview software, and does NOT say he got it illegally, does not tell others how to get it illegally, and does not encourage others to get it illegally, why not just accept that person's info rather than assuming the worst?
edited for a missing NOT -
I tried it today, I had a bin/cue file of 768megs and tried to burn it on 700mb media in the copy mode bin/cue section and it coughed it up saying I needed a gig to burn it...lol
They have to fix this....I was expecting a more polished release than this!!

My apologies.
I was assuming you were speaking from personal experience. Im sure its well known there are betas out there and just trying to emphasize that those are WAREZ.
No personal insult applied.
I just took your statement to mean more than you meant it to mean.
