  1. Greetings,

I am using pinnacle 8 for capture video from VHS tapes. Since it is not digital, it assume the entire video as one chapter. If I create menu in P8, it only take entire video as one chapter. Is there any way I can create multiple link for menu from one video file?
Is there any other program can do this?

Any help appreciated. Is there any other(better) way to create DVD from VHS tapes?-B

Do you mean Pinnacle's Studio 8? If yes:

Studio 8 can be set to create the entire video as one chapter, or you can have it automatically detect scenes during capture, or you can have it automatically make a new scene at whatever time you specify. If you do any of those 3 things then you can also have it automatically set a chapter point at each scene change.

If you capture the entire video as one scene, then you can still set chapter points where you want them. You can create many, many links from the menu to different placs in the video.

Read the help file for details, but basically you create a menu, then select the menu editor- set the timeline where you want the first chapter point, make sure #1 chapter is selected and click on the make chapter button.

  3. Thanks for reply- Yes I meant Pinnacle studio 8. I will try that.

I actually make one dvd with chapter. This time I capture video for only five minute and break in to about 8-10 files so I was able to make chapters.

    Thanks-B

  4. You don't have to break file to smaller ones. You don't need to use automatic creattion of chapters.

You can create chapters anywhere (at place that best suits your need) as you wish during creation of your DVD Menu. It is very easy. It should be explained in manual. If you still have problems, post here....

  5. Hi

Thanks for posting reply. I am still heaving issue creating menu from a single file. This file is about 45 minute video (14 GB approx.) If I select automatic method, it only created one menu.
Can you explain in brief how to create a menu with a single file?-B

  6. Ok- I guess I found a way to split the single file in to a multiple files. There is a button to split video. So basically you play the file and pause when you would like to split (or create another chapter) and then just click on the split button (edit meun) - B

  7. Try this first. Start you Pinnacle Studio version 8. Click on "Help"/"Help Topics". Select "Search" tab and into empty field type "chapter" and then click on "List Topics". First two topics should give you all you need (I hope). If you did this.... and still have problems. Reply again. But please... please try that first. OK ? Thanks.

You don't have to split video

  9. Just in case..... Here it is

Prerequisite is that in "Setup" / "Edit" you selected option "When adding a memu.." to "Ask if links should be created".
    1. Place your one big file (or hundred small clips) on timeline
    2. Place in front of that clip DVD Menu
    3. Answer No on question "Would you like Studio automatically create links to each scene after the menu ?"
    4. To create first chapter at the beggining just right-click on your big clip in timeline and from the list select "Set Disc Chapter". (be sure that slider is at the beggining of the clip)
    5. To create next (second) chapter, in the DVD Menu window clik on small arrow down that shows text "Select next button" when you stay little bit longer at that arrow. It will change number on the left from 1 to 2.
    6. Now move slider to place where you want second chapter.
    7. just right-click on your big clip in timeline and from the list select "Set Disc Chapter".
    8. Now you have DVD Menu with two chapters.
    9. Repeat steps 5.6.7. as many times as meny chapters you need. Numbers will change accordingly.
    10. Don't forget to set "Return to Menu" on the end of you clip
You can create multiple Menus and you can move from one to another. My typical DVD have 1 main menu from which I am pointing out to 3 sub-menus where I can select chapters or return back to main menu. On the end of the clip with chapters I will return to submenu. My buttons in menus are usualy small movie so it is nice dynamic with some nice music on the backround. Frame that is used in the button doesn't have to be one that chapter point is pointing to. You can select different frame from anywhere in your clip.

  10. Cool This is even better. I now like pinnacle expect it takes a long time to rendering. Is there any way to reduce this time? I have tried on my both PC (PIII and P4 (1.4 GHz). Speed is almost same on both machine)
    Thanks for your help- B

  11. Yes. But why is it that big of a deal ? You can buy assitional program to do your encoding. I believe (not sure) that fastest one should be Mainconcept MPEG Encoder. I used TMPGEnc Plus in some of my tests. Read post in my signature for guide.

  12. Hi Donpedro,

Can I create a menu and edit files and use TMPGEnc Plus for encoding? I saw in your post how to read .AVI from studio but if I have edit some video and specially added menu and audio for it how do I encode everything in it?- B

  13. Read part "How to author with MPEG files that were encoded by TMPGEnc without re-encoding" in my post.

    Simple version of that is

    1. Edit and create AVI clip (no DVD menu at this time)
    2. Encode in TMPGEnc.
    3. Import back to PS8 (DO NOT EDIT)
    4. Create menu, chapters and so on.
    5. Create your DVD.
