I was pondering a purchase of the advc-100 to convert my vhs tapes to DVD and I was wondering if I still need to get a TBC? PLMK

If your tapes are in real bad shape then yes you might want to get one. If they are in good shape, it might not make a difference.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -
I use a datavideo DAC-100 which is very similar to the Canopus unit. I find that a TBC is not needed for original source material such as commercially recorded VHS tapes, and Laserdiscs. However, for high generation VHS tapes (such as live concerts I have multi gen tapes of) a TBC helps to resolve sync issues with tracking errors, and hard edits by sending a continous signal to the DV device even if the tape does not have one.
