  1. Hi! I have a VCD/DVD player (a Sony NS400D, I believe) and I have recently discovered how to burn out VCDs and play them back on my TV. However, I have also heard that it is possible to play SVCDs on some VCD players by tricking the machine into thinking it is playing a standard VCD. On the DVD hacks forum for my DVD player someone mentions it is possible to play back SVCDs on my machine.

I understand that to create a 'trick' SVCD you need to use the simple multiplexing in TMPGEnc, which I have done, but I am having problems burning it out. If I try to burn in NERO 6 as a VCD, it tells me that the disk needs converting to VCD format. If I burn in EasyVCD, I can only do so if I turn off the MPEG checking tick box.

Although I have managed to burn out a disk in EasyVCD after turning off the checkbox (and receiving an error message telling me that it needs to be packed out, or something), all I have is a load of blocks on the screen when I try to play it back.

Can someone please give a detailed description of this procedure, in particular the burning out process? Please give the details of the software you use to burn it out, and what settings you use.

    Thanks for your help!

  2. You're on the right track. You want to burn the file with the VCD header on it as a VCD. In Nero, when it says it's not in the right format, just choose to NOT re-encode or convert it. Just burn it as a VCD and everything will be fine. Hope it works for you.

  3. Thanks - I'll give it another try and let you know what happens!

  4. If your Sony DVD player will play VCDs, I would be surprised if it will not play SVCDs.

  5. I've tried it again, but it did not work. I have a nasty feeling that my DVD player cannot handle SVCDs. I get strange blocky artifacts on the screen. I can see some of the image when I forward it, but the moment I start to play it the screen goes black and coloured artifacts appear.

Does anyone else have a Sony NS400D that can play SVCDs? I'm sure I read it was possible. Mine is a region 2.

    All help welcome ...

  6. Success!

I finally managed to get it right at the last attempt. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong, but it seems I can now play back SVCDs in my DVD player.

My thanks to all who helped ...
