  1. How do I encode an avi file to mpeg 1 or 2. And which is better mpeg 1 or 2?! Anyway, yes I have read the tutorials but I can never get to the last step of burning the dvd cause theres ALWAYS an error to come up no matter what. Plz tell me the EXACT steps, not skipping too much detail, of how to encode an avi file to whatever it needs to be encoded to. And then how I burn it to a DVD.

    All help appreciated. Thnx

  3. You may want to read up a little more on video requirements for DVDs, if you are looking to make a standard DVD, you can't even use mpeg1. And there are plenty of guides for how to encode.

What error? It would be so much eaiser to fix your error than list every step. That is what the guides are for.

I know it is possible to make DVDs with mpeg1, like when you want to put multiple VCDs on one DVD, but I did not know that was allowed as part of the DVD standard. Am I wrong? If so let me get my foot out of my mouth

A standard DVD? I always thought they had to be mpeg2 with no less than 8000kps bitrate and more than 3000kps (for video).

you are wrong on both counts (mpeg1 and your bit rate) -- thats ok , happens to many ..

  8. Well I'll be. I can admit when I am wrong, and it appears I am.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

  9. So ur sayin the lowest bitrate has to be 3000?! Or did I read that wrong, cause if thats true then thats been my problem all along. Anyway i'll try to remember some of the errors I had.

    1. I always get an error after encoding with TMPGEnc. I have an avi divx file and when I try to encode it to mpeg-1 it goes fine until over 3-4 days of encoding time. So yeah I mean right at the end when its done encoding, it gives me some weird error that I couldnt remember cause it didnt make too much sense to me.

    2. I use DVDit to author and that thing has givven me nothin but errors from the beggining. I mean, right when I try to burn movie to a dvd, it says some mess about it cant fit on a cd-r?! And I even triple checked that I picked dvd 4.7gb.

Anyway I guess I should just stop using dvdit or somethin. But is there a way I can check exactly what type the file is and all the properties for it? So then yall might be able to tell me what I did wrong, or tell me how to encode it correctly for that type of file. I dunno if i'm makin too much sense but plz help cause I really wanna get this stuff to work. Or maybe someone can give tell me the most frequent mistakes that I coulda made while encoding. Cause I bought my DVD burner for an expensive price cause I got it early, so it would be a waste to just give up on this

no -- the lowest bitrate does NOT have to be 3000 ...
