    Only tried Nimo once, but that experience was enough to make me stay very clear of anything that has "codec pack" in its name. Almost had to reformat.

  6. I agree with the others - I've only had trouble with codec packs (exactly the same as Mats in fact).

    There was another post about this somewhere, but people seemed to agree that there was probably a 'core' of codecs most people use.. something like:

    * DivX - latest version.
    * Xvid - a few different distributions available - just get the one linked to in the Tools section if you're not sure.
    * AC3Filter
    * MPEG2 codec - there's a freeware one available, but you can also get one by installing PowerDVD / WinDVD etc..
    * mp3 audio codec - use the Lame MP3 ACM Codec

    tooLame (and all the other comandline apps used by BeSweetGUI) are also handy if you're doing conversions etc.. - although these are not strictly-speaking codecs.

    Other than that, it depends what you want to do with your PC.

    For example, if you're doing capturing, you might want HuffyUV and/or one of the MJPEG codecs, or some DV codecs for example.

    My approach is to install the main ones I know I'm going to need (i.e. those above), and then just use gSpot to tell me what codec(s) I need if I come across a file that my existing codecs won't support.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.
