as most standalone dvd players seem to have problems with playing vcd's (especialy my one a hitachi dv-p305e will not play cd-r or cd-rw but will play bought vcd's any ideas?)do computer dvd's play vcd's on auto insert or do you have the same problem as the standalone, i want to put my home movies on vcd

While many older DVD players can't read CDR media; most of the new stnadalones will play x(S)VCDs (all Apex, most Pioneers, the Hitachi 505 and 415).
As for the PC, I haven't seen a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM that couldn't read CDR media.
