Ok this one has had me for a while...
In movie credits, there is always a position called "Key Grip"
What the hell is it?
I believe the grips are they people who create the structures for cameras and stuff, am I right?? Probably not.
Thanks

Good question... as I say to my kids... Did You Google it? So I did!
Key Grip
Assists the DP and expedites the lighting procedures. He also assists personnel of other departments in the loading and unloading of their equipment. He assists the personnel in the sound, wardrobe, camera, electrical and props departments without actually running such equipment.
Sounds like a do all runner! -
OK so what's a Gaffer ?
I finally figured it out from a short stint at a live theater.
I am curious about how many people know these obscure things
No cheating with Google.
The Key grip handles luggage. (originally) -
Cheating! Google is not cheating! Whatever the work, their will be special names applied like . . .
Gaffer
If it has an electrical cord on it, the Gaffer handles it. The Gaffer is responsible for the Director of Photography and handles all the lighting set-ups. He causes the lights to be picked up and returned. -
Key Grip (n.): the area on a key where it is held as one locks or unlocks a door or other object.
Oh come on, you saw that coming :P
How about Best Boy?
This should probably be moved to Off Topic though."A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."
- Frank Herbert, Dune -
Agreed, moving to off topic.
-
I won't cheat, but ya'll check me.
The best boy holds the script basically. He is in charge of the script buring production. The term came from when changes were made on a film during production and the director/writer had to announce the changes to the higher-ups. So they would choose the best boy for the job, on who would go straight to where they should and not stop along the way.
Am I close?? -
TGPO,
Maybe it's not cheating, but you, a moviemaker, have the advantage over us.
Bring on some more. I mean, there's a ton of 'em after every movie, some of the titles pretty funny. -

Here is a hint, traditionally they worked closely with the lead gaffer. More contemperary they can work in any department (which is why tgpo is partially correct).
Here is another one for people that have no clue about the best boy. Its not a position, but rather an event. What is the "Martini Shot"?"A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."
- Frank Herbert, Dune -
Yeah... well... what about "Assistant to the Best Boy" ???? Hmmm?
:P

Gaffer can also mean "boss"
i.e.
"get the gaffer on the blower, i can't get this pianer up them apple and pears!"
And when i was at school, the gaffer kept all the tape, so the black insulating tape found on movie sets and in theatres is called gaffer tape to me. confuses people in the theatre i work in now, because the techies call it duct tape. -
As it has been almost 20 hours since a guess, I will say the answers.
A Best Boy is traditionally the assistant to the Gaffer. However, it also refers to any 2nd in charge.
A Martini Shot is the last shot of the day. It is so named because the next shot the crew sees will be in a martini glass"A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."
- Frank Herbert, Dune -

I'd offer a prize, if I had one, but do any of you movie buffs know this?
.... I think I saw it on the end credits of Toy Story or TS2, but I am not positive. There was an actual credit for "Digital Angel". I'd never seen it before and I watch all the credits of every movie. My husband started calling me that, right after we saw it because I said "whatever it is - I want to be one!"
What I'd like to know is:
Is it an actual movie production function, or
Was it just made up for that one movie (whatever the movie was)?
(I did google it and found the wireless comm gadget thingy, but can't see how that relates to a movie.)There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Yes, Holistic's got it - and quickly too. I always thought that looked like a fun job. Rattlin' chains and smashing coconuts together and clomping around in men's shoes. :cD I'd LOVE to get paid to do that!
And RE: Digital Angel - YES! That's it! Thanks Holistic! And I'm going to read all you provided.
So... if I read correctly, it has something to do with visual effects (which I do - so I can be one after all! - to a degree anyway) :c))) I wonder if it's a very specific area of effects? Thanks so much for the leads, really appreciated.

Chief Sex Analyst.
We have all heard the stories of what goes on, on those casting couches -
Have you noticed, in recent decades, that casting responsibility is almost always also females? I always assumed that was an attempt to prevent that possibility or suppress accusations of casting couch behaviour.
So... what does it really stand for? There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Casting Society of America
AKA: CSA
The Casting Society of America is a professional organization of Casting Directors working in theatre, film, and television. The C.S.A. is not a union or a guild, therefore every Casting Director working in these mediums is not necessarily a member of this organization. -
