  1. I was wondering why nec lists their firmware as being only for bulk/retail drives.

Anyone know what is different from oem version?

I wanted to get this drive since prices have dropped so much but was unsure as to what version to get. Most places have oem versions only but then you have to use the firmware from Hattie and loose the warranty. I am hesitant to do that.

    Thanks

Good question. I too have been thinking about getting this drive since I want the ability to burn DVD+R discs (the burner I have now is DVD-R only) but I too am worried about firmware and whatnot.

I'm thinking of getting it from AVLOGIC.COM as they have the lowest price I've seen.

I think they refered to OEM drives as the private label drives (HP, Mitsumi, TDK, etc.) and bulk being what most online retailers refer to as OEM. Most other manufacturers refer to non retail carying there name as OEM, but NEC calls these bulk, and relabled drives OEM. I can't swear by this, but I do believe this to be true.

This would seem to make sense in that I've never seen anything other than OEM so does a real traditional retail version actually exist or does NEC call OEM the brands that use the drive under their own name (I've heard some eMachines use this drive) and then the NEC you buy "OEM" as the retail version.

    Makes sense I suppose.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer and refers to equipment that other manufacturer buy and put in there computers.
Bulk is usually just the equipment in a plastic bag and the reseller gets it in "bundles"
Retail is when it comes in a fancy box usually contains an extra cable or so .

If NEC has this mixed up I don't know though...

This guy has removed the ripping spead limitation from the drives and increased the disc compatibility. He also has firmware for other firms using the same hardware.

  11. As miko says OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. The XYZ corp. may manufacture a dvd drive that is sold to Panasonic, Pioneer, and SONY for example. The drive for each of these companies is the same (the one manufactured by the XYZ corp.) but each different company will put their name on the drive as if it were their own. Each company will warranty their own drive as well as providing bundled software with it. With this in mind, NEC probably does not want to be responsible for any problems created by damage caused by flashed firmware to an OEM drive since it was sold by the original manufacturer, not NEC or a retailer for NEC. Just my opinion.

Well I understand as I am sure the other people in this thread just what OEM means so quoting the glossary isn't going to help.

The point is NEC makes (as far as I can see) only one "type" of firmware upgrade that claims not to work with OEM and yet I have never seen for sale a traditional retail box version. They all appear to be OEM but I have read that some companies are using the drive in their pre-built PC systems (I've heard eMachines do this) so the fact that there is no standard retail version ... well it just doesn't add up ... UNLESS the definations that NEC is using to mean OEM are different than the traditional meaning.

In this case it WOULD seem that OEM means the drive that eMachines (or whomever) is using without the brand name NEC on it.

    I don't know.

I did just order one yesterday with an expected arrival date of this comming Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

I ordered mine from ACCUPC.COM for a total of $121.00

I only ordered it begrungingly so I could burn DVD+R as the DVD BURNER I have now only does 2x DVD-R but I intend to buy only DVD-R discs unless someone I know MUST HAVE the DVD+R format. I want to start charging people for converting home video stuff to DVD so I figure I better have DVD+R capabilities (for those that request it) and plus I figured it would be nice to have 4x burning as well.

  13. maa - I have been trying now (since buying the NEC 1300a) to get hold of the herrie code fram the site you mention.....but it doesn't respond....

Has this site disappeared, or am I just catching it on a bad day/week?

Does anyone have the code such that they could/would send it to me?? I have enough coasters now

I think I remember seeing that 107v2 is the latest from herrie.

    Cheers

The NEC +/- drive is going for $118 USD. I just ordered one. That is the lowest I have ever seen a dual format drive for. I paid over $500 USD for my external sony with the warranty from Best Buy at the begining of the year.

  17. If you read this thread: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=18164 it says you can flash the oem versions with either the official nec or hacked flash. Answered by the maker of the hacked flash himself, herrie.

Anyway, I just ordered my 1300a from www.avlogic.com for $118. Also ordered ritek 4x -R media and a media sample pack from www.rima.com. I get the stuff early next week.

  18. I received my NEC-1300A about two weeks ago. Interestingly, it came with 1.06 firmware which has worked fine for me but I have contemplated upgrading to Herrie's (just don't need to now). I've burned TDK+R media and Memorex+R at 4X without any problems. Just for fun I tried to burn some old KHypermedia 1x DVD-R and the playback was jumpy. I already knew this though since the drive will not burn at 1X and KHypermedia is crap. Overall, it's a great drive. Oh, Nero wouldn't recognize it until I downloaded the update from their site.

Just got my NEC ND-1300A in the mail and it has the 1.05 firmware and said it was made July 2003.

So far I've only had a chance to burn 2 DVD-R discs (both the 1x-4x certified BeAll DVD-R discs from Meritline) and I've watched both of them and everything seems A-OK. Both burned at 4.1x to 4.2x

One was a back-up of a DVD9 using DVD2ONE to shrink (to 4350MB from approximately 6.7GB) and the second one was created from a capture using TMPGEnc for encoding and TMPGEnc DVD Author for authoring and ended up being 4.04GB in total (I guess I underestimated the bitrate a tad).

  20. Just got my 1300a from avlogic.com. Manufactured july 2003 with 1.05 firmware. Made a backup of the firmware then updated to 1.07v3 from herrie's site. Upgraded to nero 6.0.0.19 and it sees the drive just fine. It's setup as secondary master.

All i have had a chance to do is play a movie. Will report back as soon as i have burn results.
