Tell your web provider that you want to be upgraded to a Sun Fire 4800. That would be a good upgrade.

Too bad it isn't to 2 XEONs at about 3Ghz each, and a few gig of ram. And I too will be helpless while it is down. Guess I'll work on some cover letters, and send out some resumes

    Anybody hiring?

Back to the server, those old processors should be plenty. What OS does it run? And how much ram? 1 place I used to hang out ran 2 Xeon (P3 series) at like 800Mhz. He was able to support forum activity with way over 1000 user at one time. The OS of choice was Redhat. And it had something like 6 GB ram. He tried to keep as much of the active stuff in ram so that it was very quick. It worked very well too. He also had a fat pipe connecting it to the world, and was mostly active for North American users. Not like the world wide user base that we have here.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

Now I understand! Any thoughts about win 2003 server? Haven't worked with it myself, but MS says it will do more with less. It must be the next best thing since sliced bread!

Doom9 is so boring compared to here

I suppose I can actually work all day......

2003 Server is still Beta, and won't be worth a DAM until SP2 is out for it, say late 2005? This is based on the history of all M$ products :P

You have a good host baldrick. Only down an hour. Some places would take longer.

Loads a bit faster here. But this upgrade wont help that much...I still have to keep optimize all my php lists(dvdplayers, tools, dvd media and such).

To be honest, it loads faster from here at school when compared to yesturday.

  26. I never noticed the speed increase. Then again, I have cable so speed is not an issue for me.

Seems pretty decent so far. No problems or crashes. Been using it since last week on a 2.4GHz P4 with 800MHz FSB and hyper threading, 512MB DDR-400 Ram.

It's pretty easy to manage and now has a built in pop-3 server. I which it had imap though, pop-3 sux.

If I were Baldrick I would for sure switch to FreeBSD. Apache, PHP and MySQL run like crap on windows, at least compared to FreeBSD or Linux.

    Hi gang 8)

    @ Baldrick..

I just did a refresh, and imo, it WAS a wittle faster hehe :P
Using 56k dialup over here in US of A.

hmm.. I can verify that twice now.. page refreshed very quickly here

Oh, and AFAICT, no more "spinning Globe" problems w/ refreshs
so, all I can say, is that your upgrade DID some good things for me, and was
    worth it in that respect

Thanks for the improvements on this end,

Far as speed goes I can't say, I'm on a modem. We'll see in a few hours when I'm at work though.

If you go for a refurb it'll probably "only" cost about half that much for the same system.
