Hi. I would like to know how to get the best quality encoding in mpg1 direct from DV files. I have tried some settings, but the quality wasn't acceptable. I would like a near DV quality, but with a smaller size. Any hints?

    thanks in advance

  2. Try CVD. It should look good enough on a TV screen, but some players will not accept such image size.

  3. Maybe CVD is my answer? I too I'm not having great results of coverting DV into MPEG1 or MPEG2. The results still look quite pixelated. I am often downloading music videos from alt.binaries.mpeg.video which are about 4 minutes in length and are about 50-60 megs in size. The quality is really really good-almost zero pixelation and close to VHS quality. When I go to find out what type of files it is with ffmegX or MPEG Info, I don't receive any info. I'd really like to duplicate those formats. I hope CVD is it?

  4. Just a bit more info on my downloads. I'm downloading several parts and joining them together with Rosetta. Each part has either "VCD(m)" or "MPEG-1(m)" in the file name. So, I'm guess that they are not CVD files?

  5. They should be VCD files, so, no need of converting them again if you just want to watch them.

  6. Okay, thanks. So then why would the VCD files that I create (converting a DV file that I imported from my video camera into a VCD file using ffmegX) look so crappy compared to the ones I download? Is there a setting in the VCD preset that I can change to improve the quality? I tried increasing the Bitrate, but that seems to have no effect.

  7. By the way, I hope I wasn't too negative with the "crappy" description. I am not saying the ffmpegx is to blame here or is below standard. I am simply struggling with why my VCD (mpeg-1) videos are not coming out a clear as most of the ones I'm getting from alt.binaries. I didn't know if there was some standard setting I'm missing.

I could ask the people in the newsgroups, but I think all of them are on Windows and I am unsure of the right questions to ask.

  8. Try with the fast mpeg-1 preset. It is less compliant to standards, so some players will not like it, but it has better quality.
