  1. I have been using TMPGEnc to convert AVI to MPEG1 for a while, so far so good, and occationaly using VirtualDub to do some touch-up, no problem.

But over the weekend after I installed a ArcSoft Photo Impression & Video Impression software (software coming with Cannon digital camera), all the video editing softwares became wiered.

In the process of installing the ArcSoft Video Impression, it asked lots of questions, one of the question, I cannot remember exactaly, was something about DirectX or DirectShow installation, I tired of reading these stuff on screen, I just hit YES to all the questions.

Now TMPGEnc cannot open the AVI file, it just freezed over there, no any error message was given. From the Window Task Manager, I realized it was not responding.

And I tried VirtualDub to open the AVI file, the VirtualDub couldn't open it either, but it gave me a error message like this (exact wording):

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a video for window(VFW) compitible codec to
decompress video. Directshow codec, such as those used by
Window Media Player, are not suitable.

Any clue on what has caused this problem? the Arcsoft Video Impression software? I removed the stuid Video Impression software, and re-installed TMPGEnc, nothing gain back.

Really need help, thanks a lot.

The Virtual Dub problem you may want to adress by using Virtual Dub mod. The TMPGEnc problem is a little harder. Nave you tried to reinstall it yet?

Probably the new software installed contained some codecs which were installed and one way or another, gained higher priority than the existing ones over decoding files. However, these new codecs don't appear to be compatible with VirtualDUB and Tmpgenc.

Has happened to me and after trying lots of contradicting things, I ended up doing the next simple thing.

Open with media player the AVI file that is giving you problems. It will most likely open and play ok.

Go to properties, advanced and check for the codec used to decode the video or audio (can be either of the two that is causing the problem).

If you find a strange new name there, go to the Control panel, under codecs and remove this codec. Reboot after that and retry with VirtualDUB.

Did exactly that to remove the elecard MPEG-2 decoder that scrambled all mpeg files playback and saved me a re-install.

You might also find useful the tool that lists codecs and removes them (saving you to go to Control panel). The tool is called DXMan.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  5. I think so, the new software screwed up with codec, but the re-installation of TMPGEnc would get correct codec back, true or false?

  6. False, TMPGEnc does not come with any codecs.
