Hello,
i ran my dvd player into the tv, then used my a/v outs from my tv back to my camcorder, the video recorded fine but i got no audio. i've already tried this with vhs and i got a/v both fine. so in theory i thought the dvd would work under the same principle, however, i only tried dvd to cam once, so maybe i didn't have something set right.
i was just curious as to if this procedure is possible or if anyone else has any experience with this. i figured i'd ask before i start getting pist.
thx,

Yes, it is possible to make this work but it's not a good idea. First, you are converting from a digital source, to an analog source, then back to a digital source. Unless you are capturing uncompressed what ever codec you are using will also introduce some more compression/artifacts. You'll have to re-encode the captured video to MPEG2 all over again. And you can only capture in real time (ie. 2hr DVD -> 2hr capture).
What most people recommend/do is to rip DVDs using a DVD-ROM drive. This has several advantages. Digital to digital copy, zero lost in quaility. Rips in faster than real time (some drives are locked at 2x which would take 30min to rip a full DVD5 disc, but the lite-on and a few other drives are not locked and will rip at 6-15x, so 3-15min for most discs).
DVD-Rom drives (eg. lite-on) for $30 online and only slightly more at brick and motar stores. I'm not 100% sure what you goal is (ie. why are you trying to get DVD info to you HD) but trust me. Getting a DVD-Rom drive to rip is the way to go.
