1.) Buy a computer with a lot of hard drive space and a DVD burner.
2.) Buy some blank media that doesn't suck (see media guide), that is also compatible with your DVD burner and your standalone DVD player.
    3.) Buy DVDXCOPY XPRESS
    4.) Install DVDXCOPY XPRESS
5.) Insert movie to backed up into DVD-ROM or DVD Burner.
A.) If you have both, insert movie to be copied into DVD-ROM and blank DVD into burner.
B.) If you only have a DVD burner, insert movie into DVD burner.
    6. Run DVDXCOPY XPRESS.
A.) If you only have a DVD burner, remove movie and insert blankd DVD when DVDXCOPY XPRESS tells you to.
B.) If you have both a DVD burner and a DVD-ROM, click on the appropriate button at the time that DVDXCOPY XPRESS tells you to.
    7.) You're done.

If you want to use free software and do trickier things, read some of the guides on this website.

Not really...all you need is a standard pc. I only have 12 GB of memory and I manage to back up all my movies. All you need is about 8GB of free space(for a standard 90 minute movie). First, make sure your standalone player can play VCD's...then go out and get some media(I prefer cd-r's because they're cheap). Download the following...smartripper, dvd2avi, tmpgenc, and an authoring program(you can find this stuff under the tools section of this guide). First, put your dvd into your dvd drive, use smartripper to extract the vob's. Then open them in dvd2avi to get the d2v and the wav file. Then use tmpgenc to encode...now you're ready to burn. Here are the two guides I used to help me figure it out:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/84759.php

In the first one, you dont have to do the chapter extractor stuff if you dont want to...i dont because it saves me time. Use the second one to fit it all on one cd(although you will lose some quality).

Good luck and hope this helps
