  1. For some of my video, I take the clip into AE and make a mask over the still part and slow the movement to zero- in other words, part of my video is absolutely still. When I try to encode, I get pixels in the still area that kinda pulsate and usually looks like two vertical lines in it.
I've tried every NR combo, soften block noise, etc., that I can find. I'd appreciate any help.

Go to the settings, select the Quantize Matrix tab and there check the third checkbox titled : "No motion search for still picture part by half pixel". This long caption stands for enabling or disabling half-pixel motion search.

It should fix the problem, but if it only reduced is, additionally check the checkbox below, titled: "Soften Block Noise" and put the values 15 to both boxes. I suggest you try values up to 35. This makes the quantization softer and reduces such flicker as well as blockiness in the source material. It's like a soften filter bult-in the quantization process.

If you still can't get the flickering solved, then check the interlaced encoding settings in the advanced Settings tab. If Field order is Top Field First, change it to Bottom Field first. What you encode, watch on the TV. Getting the field order correct is a make or break situation. If you get it correctly, motion is perfect and stills are perfectly still. Otherwise, the image quality might make you sick.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Thanks SaSi, but still no go. I've tried every setting on "soften block noise" from 1-50, the "no motion search" both on and off, etc., etc.

What I need to do-is it possible.....say you put a JPEG on your timeline in your NLE system and make a video for five seconds of said piture. Now there is no movement whatsoever, but you've still got video. Is it possible to encode this picture without blocking? I'm trying to encode an MPEG1 at 640x480, 2-pass VBR @ 5200 kbps (average).

If it helps, this is an average setting for my clips:
    Filters:
    Noise: 20,1,20
    DeInterlace: Double

    GOP:
    I: 1
    P: 4
    B:1
    Output interval: 1
    Detect scene change is checked

    Matrix:
    Default
    Output YUV: yes
    Floating Point: yes
No motion search: yes (or no)
    Soften block noise: 1-50

    Thanks for any help

    DeInterlace: Double

    change to none

deinterlacing should be done in AE if you are using AE AND if you really need to de-interlace ..

  5. One more question, and I'll quit. On my GOP settings....if I change them to 1,5,4 - will that do anything weird? It seems to help quite a bit with the noise, but I don't know enough about this to know if it'll do something strange like not allow someone else to play the vid on another computer.

    Thanks for all your help.
