OK, after going through several analog/TV capture cards, I've picked up a new All-in-Wonder 128 32meg AGP card. I'm very happy with the card.
I use it to real-time capture my VHS-C tapes of my daughter in xVCD with double the bit-rate of standard VCD. The results are good but for two things:
-The sound has constant static. The sound is clear, but in the background there is constant and consistent static. It is there when there is no intended sound from the tape.
-There is the annoying blur at the bottom of the image that is present with VHS capture.
I don't have any idea how to fix the sound. I know how to crop the image in VirtualDub, but that would then give me an avi that I would have to re-encode. Any ideas?
