depends on a few things. For starters, which encoder are you using, what are you converting from and what are you converting to. Are you having a problem? with your current settings?
I convert mostly from DVD to CVD and use CCE 2.5, 3 pass +vaf at 2520 -300 mostly to 3 CD's. GOP is 3,4,1 and close GOP's. With my DVD burner, I use the same settings and put 2 movies on 1 DVD (CD size is ramped up to 2200 and bit rate is mentally calculated based on movie and perceived action/nonaction in film.
why dont you post your file and let somebody take a look at it. -
Hmmm...I would like to know as well.
Here's an example...
2 Hour movie, Anamorphic, 5.1 Dolby Sound, 2 Audio tracks, going to make CVD Selectable Subtitles, & Chapters.
Prefer trying to fit atleast 1 hour on 1 CD, while trying to produce maximum quality. Audio Bitrate, lets say 160 for both the Audio tracks.
Using TMPGEnc to encode, using 2 Pass VBR.
Let the analysis begin...Check out my guide on converting .OGM format to an SVCD with Selectable Subtitles and Multiple Audio tracks.

If you haven't already done this I suggest you change the rate control mode to: 2 pass variable bitrate (VBR) and Motion search precision to High quality (slow). The two pass VBR will double the TMPGenc encode times, but to me it is well worth it for the boost in quality of the final product. I personally can not see any difference in quality when changing Motion search precision from High quality to Highest quality. I can see differences between High Quality and any of the other options (except Highest quality as stated above.) With just changing to these two settings, I have gotten excellant quality conversions to two SVCDs with movies as long as three hours. -
You should never close the GOPs...
MY PERSONAL SETTINGS are to close GOP's. -

absolutely necessary.

I haven't noticed an image change with keeping it open or closed. What I have noticed is that I don't get any damn errors from MF2 or other authoring softwares when I dump my CVD's (with 48mhz audio) into them to make a DVD-R.
Nothing pisses me off more than to have to re-encode an entire movie over again because I get a GOP error.
Again, for me, personally, I close GOP's. Ain't hada problem since making that change.
Sorry, I'm a thick-headed pollack, ain't gonna listen to no damn manual either. Real Men don't read instructions anyway :P :P -

I already have it set to 2 Pass and Highest, I don't know about GOP's because I don't mess with that...
