First off to begin with nowadays a lot of generic brand DVD Players are coming out, that are 10X better than the best Sony DVD Player out their. To top it off they are a lot cheaper, but you just have to find them. The best place I can suggest to you is Brandsmart.
It seems that your friend has a name brand DVD Player but it is one of those good quality ones and cheap ones too. In my opinion Sony is probably not a good company in DVD Players, nowadays only thing Sony is good at is Playstation 2.
Now you say that you burned an ISO formatted movie that doesn't work, are you sure that it is a movie and not some game or installation program, usually when you create SVCD's almost all PC's can play them IF you have the right software for example PowerDVD, WinDVD etc. So what software are you using to play your SVCD...?.
How did you burn it, what software you used...?
P.S :- Up to date I have not physically seen a SONY DvDPlayer that supports SVCD;s.
