  1. OK, I just got an Optorite DD0203 DVD+/-RW drive. I am using Fuji DVD-R's that come in the 50pack. According to DVDInfo, they are Ritek G03's. I burned a DVD at 2x speed in my DD0203 using Nero 6 with the newest firmware (2.17) that plays in the following:

    APEX AD-1500 standalone
    APEX AD-500 standalone
    Playstation 2
Samsung SD-612 (PC internal 16X DVD Drive)

It will NOT play in the following:
KLH KD-1220 standalone (from what I read is supposed to read everything -- gives me "BAD DISC" error
Samsung SM-348B (PC internal 16x DVD Drive w/CD-RW) (oem) -- just keeps trying to read it indefinitely.

Here's the thing that's bugging me. Rather than chalk this up to incompatibile media, I have a DVD-R that is ALSO identified as a Ritek G03 that was NOT burned in the Optorite that WILL work in the SM-348B drive and the KLH 1220 standalone.
I know that the discs are from different batches, but I don't know why they wouldn't both work?
In Nero, instead of choosing DVD-VIDEO, I chose DVD-ROM (UDF) and unchecked Multisession. I read that these steps increase compatibility.

What am I doing wrong, or is the Optorite just burning fickle discs? What should I try to do? Thanks!

  2. First thought is try diff media with the Optorite. Also try using DVD-Video in Nero. And try diff Burning software.
Doing all these steps will help you identify if the Media is the problem the Burning Technique or the Hardware ( Burner or Players )
Yes you use a few disk but helps for future, as will lower chances of making a coaster later on.
Honestly too many other possibilies left to say that the drive is the problem.
There are some issues with the drive, but there are some issues with all drives, each one has it own quirks.
And one last obvious point it could just be a bad disk. It happens

  3. I have this burner. I just got some Ritek G04 DVD-R and was very surprised to find that this media won't play in my new Sony standalone. I know that people generally get good results with Ritek media in this burner. And I know that people have used this media with good results in my player. I've burned the same image to a DVD+RW and it works fine.

I haven't had a chance yet to determine if this batch works in other players.

Figuring all this out is quite a nuisance.

  4. Nero does not list the Optorite in its listing of compatible drives. It does, however, list the Accesstek DD0203 as being compatible with Nero 5.5.10.32 and above, and the Sanyo CRD-BPDV2 as being compatible with Nero 5.5.9.25 and above. Supposedly these two drives and the Optorite are all identical transports. Even Optorite claims their transport comes directly from Sanyo.

I'd be interested in knowing if there's any AccessTek and/or Sanyo owners out there having problems in Nero.

  5. indolikaa,

Are you interested in knowing of an Optorite owner that hasn't had problems with Nero. I've burned many DVDs with Nero that work just fine.

  6. Thanks for all your help. As suggested, I just burned the same disc using DVD-VIDEO and it now works in the KLH KD-1220 standalone. The one thing I think that must have caused it not to work was the lack of an AUDIO_TS folder in the first one, since I used a different burning method that didn't create one.

The new DVD still won't read in my Samsung SM-348B DVD+CD/RW combo drive. Like the first one, the light rapidly blinks like it is trying to read it indefinitely. As mentioned, the other RITEK G03 disc not burned in the Optorite plays in the drive. However it should be noted that this disc was not in the same batch as the ones that I am burning now, and it wasn't burned in an Optorite drive.

Do you think that 5/6 players playing it is pretty good for my 2nd DVD burn ever? Should I just let it go and chalk it up to incompatibility, or could this be a problem with all Optorite drives or just mine?

    Thanks alot.

I'm also very suspicious with DVD-R burning with my optorite
    many tests, many questions
burn many differents -R media (Bulkpaq, Memorex, Verbatim, Q 4x) and everytime I can't read those dvd in a PC reader (differents brands tested : Liteon 163d, Pioneer 116 & 119R, Samsung), but they play very well in standalone player (Toshiba, Pioneer 535, Sony). Also tried different software.
When I make the same tests with +R media (Imation, Verbatim, Memorex), they play flawlessly in my PC.
The problem is the same with data dvd (impossible to read -R media onto my PC, no problem wih +R)
The big mystery is that the same -R media, written with another burner (a Pioneer) will be read without any problem.
    Any clue ?

  8. The Optorite site recommends 6 +R brands, 7 +RW brands, 3 -R brands and 2 -RW brands. Based on what I've read and experienced with my burner, I'm going to stay away from -R media with this drive unless it's one of the recommended ones.

I hope that this list is not maintained... otherwise, what are the benefits of firmware upgrade ?
The problem is that I've purchased a multiformat burner, not a +R burner
I don't think it's a problem of media, because other burner give me the same dvd readable with my readers...

  10. Could any of you guys (Michelle, aston, indolikaa) post a media info of a DVD+R and a DVD-R with the movie on it, please?

Not that I could solve the problem, I'm just curious.

    Thanks.

  11. I can't remember where I read this but I think the new firmware is not for the DD0203 (even though it was originally listed as the 2.16 update). Has anyone else used the 2.17 update, and if so, with what results?

  13. After reading some other forums it seems like some people are having trouble getting their firmware back to 2.16. Right now 2.17 is working fine but if I am concerned that I will be stuck there for good. Once 2.18 comes out do you think I'll be able to update, or do you think Optorite will release some sort of way to get 2.17 out? I just hope it keeps working OK...

  14. I was unable to revert back to 2.16 in Windows, but it worked fine in DOS (requires a different download).

  16. Yesterday I bought some Sony DVD-R. They are considered to be high quality disks. The Optorite burner wouldn't even recognize them. Today I exchanged them for Sony DVD+R and they work fine.

If someone is having a compatibilty problem what are the various things they can try to get it working?

    Here's what I know about:
    DVD-VIDEO or DVD-ROM (UDF)
With +R set booktype to DVD-ROM if you have a Ricoh-based burner

Thanks. Why does Nero have so many DVD options? There's DVD-ROM (ISO), DVD-Video, DVD-ROM (UDF) and DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO). When I test with a DVD+RW they all work.

    Thats right they do.
Dont ask me why, probably because DVD+RW doesn't require finalization.

    Ask a DVD guru.

Nero has so many options because DVD-Video format is not the only one people use.

  22. If I burn a DVD-R using DVD-Video and burn another one using DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO) (both with UDF 1.02) will I see any difference in DVDInfo?

  23. I don't think so.

Why do you ask. Could you see any?

I'm trying to figure out why switching from one method to the other sometimes clears up a compatibility problem.

Both variations should make DVD-Video compliant result.

Even their programmers couldn't answer your question, I think.

I have done data backups with Nero but not any video yet.

The only real problem I can say these drives have are related to DVD-RW. This is not an issue for me, as my preference leans heavily towards +R/W. As for Nero, I won't be trying any DVD-Video stuff for another couple of weeks. I'm kinda hooked on DVD-Lab!
