  1. It has been awhile since I defragged my HDD and it is becoming noticeable when I watch DivX movies (think of a badly dubbed movie). Anyway I thought I would finally get around to doing it but need some suggestions for a good freeware/shareware degragment program.

I was using Diskeeper but that screwed up and before that Norton Utilities. So what program do you use and would you recommend it?

Nothing wrong with the Windows one, and BTW in 2k or XP the drag problem is a stripped down licenced by MS version of Disk keeper. But I've never had a problem with defrag.

    You tried FDISK ?.... :P

    Seriously , I used to use http://www.vopt.com/VoptXP.htm
this, but since i now have my video on a seperate drive i simply burn it to CD/DVD and format the drive. Rarely defag now because most of my files are on seperate partitions/drives from the OS.

I just use the Norton one because I can customize certain files to be on the inner or outer portions of the platters. I'm sure there are others that do this as well but since I've got SystemWorks I may as well use it. Nothing wrong with the Windows defragger, but I'm not sure if it rearranges files like the Norton one (less frequently-used items go to the end of the line). Not even sure if it really makes a difference. I defrag each drive once a week and I suggest people do the same. You can schedule it to do it while you're sleeping if you wish.

  9. Yes agree diskeeper lite better than m$ as it is much quicker. A good idea to defrag on regular basis as ordinary internet use leaves loads of small files around. Downloaded files are normally very very fragmented. Copying a large file from one physical disk to another will tend to put it into one clump as well.
