  1. this burner is named in MS Explorer as DVD-RAM, and it doesn't recognise DVDs discs (ROM, -+R). What's wrong? I didn't try with a DVD-RAM.
    Win XP, Nero 6.

  2. Please specify what you mean by "doesn't recognise". It could be any number of things. Which isn't recognizing... the OS, Nero, a DVD movie, a blank disk... etc.

It is listed as DVD-RAM on my Win XP computer as well (I think that's normal). This not recognizing DVD-ROM is strange. However, when I first installed the drive, I had the same problem. In fact my Lite-On CDRW wasn't working either. Strange!! So I de-installed Nero, installed the software that came with the LG 4040, then rebooted. Everything worked as advertized. I then re-installed Nero 6, and still everything was fine. Not sure why this happened, but try it.

One other thing I forgot to mentioned. I also removed the LG 4040 from the device manager so to force Win XP to reinstall it's driver on boot up. Win XP does this automatically. Good luck.

  5. thanks tawnyag75,

I did all of yours recomendations, uninstall Nero, remove in the device manager, reboot and ... same thing: just another CD driver in my XP sys.
Whe I tried to burn a CD Nero return me : Drive is being used by another program (or like this). Remove all programs bounded with LG and reboot, then I could to burn a CD.
Now I will going to replace the driver with another one, maybe it's a hardware problem.

I will return with the reults.

    Tnx.

    Marco,

If I remember correctly, I think the LG bundled software (the burner) actually recommends that you uninstall all other burner software prior to installing the bundled stuff. I think the bundled software screws things up if Nero's already installed on your computer. Try uninstalling everything (nero, bundled software..etc)...start from scratch. Win XP (make sure you do an Win XP update to get the most update drivers from Microsoft). Win XP should auto-detect the LG drive and install the proper driver (as GSA 4040..I think) and list the drive as DVD-RAM when you open "My Computer." Good luck. I know this is very painful!

  7. I just installed mine in XP pro.

I followed the directions. Installed the drivers etc. (I haven't run the DVD-RAM thing yet) I even installed the free (almost junk) software they include.

I already had Nero 5.5 from a different cd writer I bought. I had to buy the DVD upgrade (24$) and install two patches for nero, and nerovision express.

    Works just great!

I don't have any 4x disks to try...it did choke on a Memorex 4x disk (I am willing to bet it is the disk and not the drive) but ALL the other disks I have tried worked fine...even my 1$ TDK 2x DVD-Rs.

That is all I ever asked for...
