  1. just bought a sony DRU500ax (i dont know squat)....but why is it (other than my stupidity),that i cant make a dvd that will hold anymore clips than i could w/a vcd. more or less,5-600mb (or so) of mpeg (avi, etc) movies fill up an entire 4.7gb dvd. i thought i'd be able to put a lot more of 'em on a dvd (and it be several hours long).....thanks .....s

what software are you using to author your dvd's, and how are you doing it?

it sounds like your authoring software is converting your avi & mpeg clips to the dvd standard mpeg-2 files, which will bloat them depending on the encoder you are using and how compressed the originals are.

if you just burn it as a data disc, you can fit tons of hours of material on the disc - but if you want to play it on a standalone player, it needs to be in standard dvd format (or you need to get a player that will play raw mpeg or avi files).

so what steps are you going through, and with what software?

  3. hp,
....i use sonic my dvd 4.0,show biz or record now dx. and yes, they convert the avi, mpeg, dat etc to the mpeg2 as they process and burn the dvd.
i did know you can store a ton of these files (as data). but i was wanting them playable in my home entertainment dvd/vcd disc player (which does play 'em). its just i cant figure out how to get more clips on a dvd and it be playable.
i have been changing the clips (sometimes) to mpeg1,mpeg2 etc but they still take up a very large amount of disk space no matter how i do them....
    thanks,
    ......s

  4. schmaydee,

    1) Don't be so hard on yourself. At one time we all knew less than nothing. You've cone to the right place for help.

    2) You might want to consider encoding the AVI/MPEG files with a dedicated encoder first, then just author the DVD compliant files. The biggest thing is bitrate and time. Those are your 2 biggest factors. My suggestion to you for now is to go and read some guides in the encoding section. Then come back and ask some more questions if you have any. Some of the guides are so god, that they may clear up any questions you have.
