nero 6 burning taking 4 ever?? please help.

i recently purchases a dvd panasonic sw9581(matshita) recordable drive, an i am using nero 6,when i burn a mpeg to dvd i need to transcode it before burning which takes about 3 and half hours to do,,this is the only way it will play on my goodmans dvd player,if i burn as data the goodmans player says disk unknown,yet when trying a friends dvd disk and he uses the burn as data process it plays fine on my goodmans player.

i have used all kinds of dvd minus media yet with the same result.
i am convinced iam doing something fairly straight forward incorrectly but dont know what.
please anyone any advice..
ps using windows xp pro
amd athlon xp
loads of memory.
2.0 hard drive

just any standard movie downloaded of p2p mpeg format ,, say 90 mins long.

how do u burn without nero encoding (or transcoding),, its this thats taking so long.
