  4. Standalones are a lot more picky than computer-based DVD players. You have to adhere more strictly to the plain-vanilla DVD standard to get your DVDs to play in most standalones. (Though your DVDs will rpobably never plays in ALL standalones of all makes & maodels.)
    Rules of thumb:
[1] LImit your DVD length to 1 hour max. (Yeah, I know. But what can you do? Pro DVD authoring programs like DVD Maestro won't even allow you to create single-layer DVDs as long as 90 or 120 minutes. They'll give you an error mssg and refuse to author 'em.)
[2] Use UDF 1.02 instead of 1.05 if you're burning from an ISO image using the DVD ROM setting. (If you burn from Spruce or Prassi, those programs take care of this uatomatically for you.)
[3] Make sure your DVD encoding settings are within the official DVD spec. That means 720 x 480 max bitrate 8000 min bitrate 2000 with the box checked to force a minimum date rate of 2000. Some standalone DVD players won't play a DVD if the bitrate drops below the official minimum of 2000.
[4] Make sure you use one of the following combos for audio: [1] AC-3 only; [2] WAV only; [3] AC-3 plus WAV audio; [4] AC-3 plus MP2; [5] WAV audio plus MP2. Any other combination is not strictly within the official guidelines for DVDs and may cause problems in standalone DVD players.

Following these guidelines, I've have excellent luck getting my DVD-Rs to play on most other folks' DVD players.
