  1. o.k...just when i thought i solved this problem ....

basically what happens is that when i try to encode the .avi i get an error message that says that TMPGENC has generated errors and will close.

i managed to solve this problem before by just changing the file extention from .avi to .asf per the suggestion of the people in this forum but now im having the same problem with similar files and the .asf trick isn't helping.

this is the link to my previous thread. it contains all the specs
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=175450

even though its not the same file as above it has the exact same info on gspot (except for the file name and size)

i don't know if it matters but i managed to pinpoint this problem to .avi files that have the S-MPEG4 Version 3 Codec.
and even though the .asf trick worked on one of these files ...it doesn't seems to work on the rest of them.
let me mention again that the files play flawlessly in wmp. gspot does recognise that my codec is installed and im not experiencing any other problems except for this one which is really frustrating...

    any suggestions or ideas

See if your file will open with Vdub. If so,
frameserve the file to TMPGenc and it won't crash.

  4. thanks for answering:

first off, i am on w2k pro and i have norton anti virus so i know that my system is clean...

yes...vdub does open the files...but how do i frameserve it to TMPGENC?can you recommend a good guide? does it take long?

i would still like to know if there's a way to make this work without going through the extra step of framserving it to Tmpgenc but if thats what needs to be done then...so be it...

  7. Thanks, honorary brutha. Your link led me to a guide that was much clearer than the one I saw somewhere else. That just left me totally baffled, mainly because in the guide from your link, the correct advice was given to rename the .vdr file .avi; that in itself made all the difference in the world.

But it also raised some questions for me:

    1. VirtualDub has always been, in my experience, a very finicky program when it comes to trying to do any editing without choosing a compression option first. It sends up a warning that if no compression is selected the uncompressed file could be huge. Does using the frameserver void those warnings? It wasn't totally clear in the guide, when the author says "Open your video and do all the editing. When you are done with all editing Start the frameserver by select File->Start frame server..." exactly what he meant. I left the compression of Divx 5.0.5 selected, with full processing, and all the filters/resizing options selected in Virtual Dub and then hit "Start/Save".

    2. I also selected the wav file via Vdub's "Browse" for audio. Is that ok? I'm noticing that the usual toolame temp wav has not been created like it usually does. I don't know if it will kick in after this routine is through, or if I then have to do it manually then mux in bbmpeg.

    Any help is much appreciated.

  8. on the video menu in vdub make sure that you have it on DIRECT STREAM COPY ...that will help deal with the whole compression issue...

as for the audio...i dont know much about the stuff you mentioned ...all i can tell you is that after the frame serving is set up you just load the file to TMPGENC and it works ...video and audio...
    hope this helps
