  2. Steve, you can check most media id's by going to the tools section here and D/Lng a program called "DVDINFO." Once you load it up..but a burned disk in your dvd burner (some burners will read blank, but just to be safe put in a burned disk) and select the "INFO" button making sure your DVD BURNER is the drive selected.....when you hit info you'll see a media id....I'm pretty sure those Memorex -R disks are "CMC" produced...but you can post your results here by copying and pasting the id if otherwise.

  3. 2X: Prodisc
    4X: CMC
Lots of people are bashing CMC's discs. But so far , I've had luck with them, no coaster yet.
I got both Memorex 2X and 4X from CompUSA recently.

Thanks, tried the DVDinfo but no good. My computer is a Gateway G6-400 which is 5 years old & the Toshiba DVD player in it will not read either a burned or blank DVD-R.

  7. Only a recorder can read the manufacturer ID - I am not aware of any DVD-ROM that can read this information.

You've been lost in space GarryHeather.. A DVD ROM can read the info as well....with "DVDINFO" not "ADVDINFO"..that's just one benefit on DVDINFO of the many...over ADVDINFO.

Tried the DVDINFO but my 5 year old Toshiba DVD in my computer reads as no media. Guess it is time for a new computer.

FWIW, I tried both and couldn't read DVD+R or -R in my Liteon flashed to a LJMS HD-163
Doesn't matter though, as my DVR-106 should be here tomorrow

  11. Lite-on 163's and 165's CAN NOT read media ID, neither can the Matsushita SR8586.

Also the Pioneer slot loading DVD-ROM belonging to a colleague will NOT read media ID.

There may be one or two DVD-ROM drives that can read the media ID, but I can assure you they are NOT the majority !

BTW Adder_78 - the issue is not the software used to read the ID, it's whether or not the hardware can:

    A. Read the ID in the first place,
    B. Has the necessary command structure in place to return this code when unterrogated by external means.

There are numerous utilities for reading this, but I have yet to find a DVD-ROM that will display this information regardless of the software used. There is no need for a read only device to be able to read this information, so it is simply not employed.

The same goes for CD-ROM's - very few, if any, of those will read the ATIP on CD-R's, but the writer which needs to know these things, can.

  12. @garyheather, you need to relax buddy. Here was your first quote

You said "ANY" meaning no DVD ROM can read the id's....you were wrong...relax..it's no big deal. I haven't checked every DVD ROM on the planet so I don't know which ones do and which ones don't. However, interestingly enough...the media "TYPE" such as + OR - format can be almost always distinguished in my DVD-ROM..however, certain brands of media..mainly the generic brands...are not supported in my DVD-ROM which is the LITE-ON 166S.

Bottom line is many people can have DVDR's read in their DVD ROM and that is just ONE of the MANY advantages of nicw's DVDINFO over the older, more outdated, ADVDINFO.

Getting back to the original subject, Memorex DVD-R. Like Li Wen Cheng wrote, 2X is Prodisc, 4X is CMC. I bought a stack of 25 Memorex 4X DVD-R from Staples, and so far have burned 14 with 1 coaster out of the 14.

It seems that the 2X Prodisc come in the 10-pack box with jewel cases, and the 4X CMC come in a 25-disk spindle. I haven't seen the 4X Memorex DVD-R in a box anywhere (brick-and-mortar store) yet.

  14. On my Pioneer Ao4 Memorex DVD-R work fine when burning. On my old DRU500 Sony I could not burn then. I Think Khypermedia and Memorex are the same disc. Why I think so the cae look the same and both brand's Sony can not burn. But my Pioneer AO4 burn themno problem. Also Khypermedia is cheepper a buck a DVD-R when on sale

  16. The Memorex 4x DVD-R disks (made by CMC) do *not* burn at 4x on an LG GSA-4040B drive, only at 2x.

All this time, I thought that Radio Shack was the parent of Memorex. (yes, I know all the discs are imported.)

  18. Defense:

    You cheeky bugger !

When I said I was not aware of any DVD-ROM that could read the media ID I meant just that - so stop putting words into my mouth. I'm big enough and ugly enough to say what I mean. I mean I am not aware, ie never found, in my own experience of a fair number of different drives by different manufacturers, a DVD-ROM drive that can read the MEDIA ID. Clear now ?

I wonder if maybe you are confusing the media TYPE with the media ID when reading my reply - as DVD-ROM drives have to be able to identify the media type (ie DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CD etc) in order to read them. The Media ID on the other hand is only of use to the recorder. If you try and read the media ID off of a DVD-ROM drive you should expect to see utilities like DVDInfo report words to the effect of "Drive can not read media ID".

Perhaps I can make it clearer still by saying in no uncertain terms that some DVD-ROM drives will not be able to read the ID, you need a recorder to be confident of extracting that information.

    Everyone happy now ?
