  1. I'm building a new machine. Will be using a Serial ATA Hard Drive. My neighbor drops by today and says his buddy is having problems with his serial HD and capturing video. "The serial hard drive is too fast for capturing video" is what the friend told my neighbor. Sounds totally goofy to me. Anyone using SATA? How's it working for you? Thanks-

Well, i don't use a SATA drive for capturing, but i can transfer DV over the network onto the SATA drive faster than real time.....

Sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

  3. I do have a serial ATA hard drive, however I am not capturing video onto it, but I have never had a problem with it. I don't see how it would be too fast, I think that's silly.

  4. He's full of it. A drive can't be too fast for this. Now, a 10k SATA drive might be considered "not the best choice" for a DV capture drive, since a 5400RPM IDE will do just as well and be much cheaper per GB of storage. ut that's a different issue.

Obviously, a drive can't be too fast to be good for capturing.

Building a system around SATA drives has only one tricky spot. SATA drives are rated for 150Mbps transfer rate. Early motherboards with SATA controllers were implementations of SATA converters after PCI UDMA 100 controllers. This resulted in those systems not being able to actually use the SATA drives to their maximum throughput.

So, when buying a motherboard, check the chipset and performance. For expert advise, consult www.tomshardware.com
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

...and the Corvette is too fast to be an pace car at the Indianapolis 500.

I run DV captures onto a 15K SCSI RAID array without any problem. It sounds like your neighbor's friend is suffering from...

P.S. I also run SATA on the other machine. No problemo.
