I capture as an avi then later compress it to mpeg2. There is no sync problem as far as I can tell, but when I author the mpeg file with tmpgenc author program, the vob files that were created by the program are out of sync. It starts out perfectly, then a few minutes into the movie, it goes out of sync. How do I fix that?

Is it 2 seconds off the entire movie (after it initally starts) or is it 2 seconds, then Ok, etc.
What are the specs of the AVI. When you converted the audio, did it have a number -ms in the file name.
Here is my recommendation. download dvd2svcd and use one of the templates for DVD (or CVD quality), then dump the resulting mpeg into your authoring program.
Otherwise, demultiplex the video/audio and in any audio app, add in, take out, whatever the audio to make it work with your video -
I'm not ripping a dvd, I'm capturing from my vcr or laser disk. I use virtualDub and PowerDirector Pro 2. In virtualDub I usually use the huffy codec. So I get about 10 to 15 dropped frames for every 30 minutes. I capture at 29.97 fps. also I capture with res. of 720x480. When I compress it, the avi/mpeg2 is in sync. But when I author it, the vob files get out of sync. It starts out fine, then after a few minutes, the sound is about a second behind the actual video. I don't know about the -ms. I'm kind of new to this.

dvd2svcd will still work with your avi (when you initially said avi, I was assuming you meant and xvid or divx file).
The thing with verifying the video/audio sync on your computer, is that it (unlike a DVD player) is VERY forgiving.
If you have the vob's, you can use dvd2avi and see if it gives a -ms it gives you an idea that the audio is off by XX amount)
with VCR (dont know about laserdisk resolution), try to cap at 352x480. You shouldnt see a quality loss (unless you are on a widescreen) and with the lower resolution, it might stop the frame losses.
Anyway, try dvd2svcd on a short clip and see what it does. Should clear up the audio issue.
