  1. Hi

I am trying to convert small clips from DVDs to avi for manipulation on my PC. Problem is, I can't seem to find a method which provides suitable quality AVI's.

    What I have tried are;

    1. DVD2AVI and Smart Ripper - file sizes are huge, also times are silly and quality is poor.

    2. Adaptec Videoh - poor quality. USB 1 may be the problem.

I am now looking at Firewire capable hardware eg DAZZLE
HOLLYWOOD 1394 DELUXE VIDEO EDITING KIT.

Can anyone give me advise on this or other hardware because I really need a good solution soon??

    Thanks for your time.

    Regards

  2. Being an impatient soul, I too found Adaptec's Videoh a waste of time - again as I realise now that the USB ports on an NF7 mobo just don't like USB1.1

I took that back and got the Pinnacle PCTV Deluxe which owing to the ports and iffy software was a waste of time too

Getting even more impatient, I bought the Canopus ADVC-100 with which I was able to SCART into from VHS, DVD etc and capture AVI without any hassle whatsover.

  3. Thanks for your reply.

Does the Canopus convert directly to AVI? Also, which editing program do you use?

I use Premiere 6.5 which is excellent but, I find that it becomes unusable when MPEG2 files are loaded - it just grinds the machine to a halt.

    Thanks

  4. 1. DVD2AVI and Smart Ripper - file sizes are huge, also times are silly and quality is poor.
    What are you talking about??

Ripping the DVD with smartripper/dvddecrypter and frameserving it with
DVD2AVI is THE BEST quility you could get.

It impossible to get any better quility!!!

Trying to capture dvd-clips with a analog capture card?, blah.

  5. How long does it take and what size are the files after putting it through DVD2AVI?

  6. DVD2AVI has frameserving if you plan to convert more than a few minutes.

Under file is "save project", so the file size is 0 (zero)

  7. I got a Canopus ADVC-100, it is by far the best solution I have tried to nab small clips from dvds.

Just two question if anyone has done it before -

    1. When I bring the clips into Premiere 6.5, are there any specific methods to maintain as sharp an image as possible?

Eventually the output is an avi compressed with the Intel Indeo 5 codec. The results are good but, I feel that a wee bit more could be squeezed out of it !

    2. When using the Canopus 100, is it better to have the dip pins set to analogue or digital when recoring from a dvd player or vhs?

    thanks

  8. Just read the guides DVD -> DivX or XviD... I just dont understand why are you using poor quality codecs like Intel Indeo 5... Like tonyp12 said the DVD2AVI is just a frameserver but with avisynth+virtualdub (or with some other software) you can produce great quality rips. You really should learn more about the codecs and the softwares that can produce high quality avi's... 8)
