  2. You could but nothing would play it.

You need to extract the mpeg files first from the VCDs. Use VCDEasy or ISObuster (search guides under these tools) to extract the .dat file (which is really the mpeg file). Then you can join the files into one mpeg. Then you can save it to DVD as a data file with that mpeg file. This will play on your computer with WinDVD etc. but will not play on a standalone DVD player. Or you can author it with a DVD authoring program (My DVD etc). But you will have to re-sample the sound from 44 Khz to 48 khz.

Look for VCD to DVD guides here to fill out the steps.

There is a a fair amount of learning involved.

  3. Cool..thanks for your help... and software ideas
The question was more of, why cant the media (DVD) be considered extensable from the files... In otherwords when a DVD player see's a DVD (media) it thinks mpeg2.. too bad it just does not read the file structure and then use which codec for that layout..

Then I could use a VCD structure on a DVD media..

Actually, the player sees the dvd media and thinks dvd file structure. VCD Mpeg1 video is valid for DVDs.

In the past, people complained about the opposite. They wanted to play miniDVD (dvd structure on a cd-r) in their players. Unfortunately, the players saw the cd media and thought VCD/SVCD file structure.

In short, the codec are supported. The file structures are however, not the same. Unless you write your own firmware.

By The Way: I would not be supprised if there were players that (given a non-standard disc) just show the files and let you pick one to play. I think I had an Apex that did that for cdr.

  5. Actually my own DVD player the Sampo 631CF will read raw mpeg files on CDs with the standard firmware. There is a patched firmware that will allow one the option of having it read a DVD as a DVD Rom and thus play a raw mpeg on DVD. I never did anything with that because I didn't have a DVD burner for the longest time, but now that I do, I still don't think I'll bother. Once you learn to author DVDs it's no big deal to whip up a compliant disc. In fact you get to like fooling around with menus. (Although it is super easy to make quick DVDs without a menu.) But plan to spend three to six months learning it all.
