terminator movie pauses 3 or 4 times!

Hi

First of all am I right in saying that all dvds pause once (oringinals), its just the way they have been made. At least this is my experience with bought and rental dvds on my Yamaha s520 and other dvd players.

The question:

I am using a Pioneer DVR 105 and DABSVALUE DVD-R media (very cheap). All my movies I copy normally pause between three/four times very briely while watching the movie (e.g. terminator).

Is this becuase I am using cheap media (have read other posts)? Or something more sinister?

I had the same problem using DVDXCopy Xpress so I switched to DVD Shrink and now my movies burn Fine. What program are you using to Copy the Dvd to your Hard Drive?

More than likely it's bad media, and no original DVD's shouldn't pause during playback unless you hit the pause button on your remote.

If will fit on one disk then DVD shrink 3 beta and if want to copy 2hr plus movie on two discs then sue DVD decrypter to extract to hard disc and then use DVD fab to split it.

All DVD's are created with NERO burning rom?

So must be another reason???

every dvd I have ever watched pauses at least once. I remember the uk store TESCO plc putting up signs to customers to say please dont return dvds if pause once half way throw movie, that is just how they are burned. Becuase they are Dual layer, so when laser moves to second layer there is slight pause (few milli seconds).

But you worry me now that my Yamaha player is no good because this always happens? Are you sure you have never had an original dvd pause for few milliseconds?

your DVDplayer can be just have dust.. clean it a bit that was my problem.

every DVD shiped (even real DVD) and every of my backup that skiped, didn't in my friend player..

but since you use very vey cheap media, that might be the problem. for me it was with Ritek, so I wouldn't think of a bad media..

Some DVD players pause during the transition from one layer to the next, but other than that there should be no pausing!

That's BS. It shouldn't pause, that is *not* normal. I had an Apex player that used to do that, but it was a peice of junk. None of my current players ever pause.

I tried my TERMINATOR 2 (not the newest one but the release before that ... the one that came in a TIN METAL slipcase) in 4 different DVD players and ALL of them had trouble playing it straight through.

So much for BRANCHING being supported by "most" DVD players.

Terminator TGPO how can you be the only guy not to experince a slight pause? (very jealous )I will try and clean lense.

Originals - pause only once (can live with)
Copies - up to 4 times (can't live with)

Finally will buy more expensive media in future. As DABSVALUE is only 90pence per DVD-r.

If it's seamless branching that you're referring to, some authoring suites implement this better than others.

The Panasonic authoring system (about $100K) is touted for its ability to implement seamless branching, Scenarist ($15K-$22K) is a close second.

I'm sure players could have a lot to do with it also, just thought I'd through some info I'm aware of into the hat.

here's my question - how big is the movie on the disc?

if the main movie files are less than 4.7Gb, then the first layer may have the movie, and the second the extras, so in that case there would be no layer change during the body of the film....

and even so... it's not a 4 layer disc, why are you getting 4 pauses? And with every disc? I think it's your player - I've never noticed a pause in any of my discs, other than some vob file compilations I've done with DVD Lab. Certainly not on any of my commercial discs...

One of my DVD players ia a Pioneer DV-250 ($88 at Walmart), an Xbox with DVD kit, and the last is via my PC, a lite-on DVD-Rom drive and output to TV via a sigma Xcard. Don't know why, but I have never noticed so much as a glitch playing on any of them. I have watched my Terminator 2 Ultimate edition disk on all three. I may be wrong, but isn't the first termiator on a DVD-5 disk? Even if it was normal for a pause on two layer disks, you should not be getting pauses on single layer DVDR's for sure.

Try burning on Ritek disks, I am convinced they are the best and they are pretty cheap too. I get mine at allmediaoutlet.com

You're correct, the very first Terminator movie is a DVD-5.

The pause is caused by the dvd switching to the dual layer. All three of my players do this, not sure why termindator does it four times though.

In summary:

Problem of pausing either from:

1) Yamaha player
or
2) Cheap media

1) First of all all originals play fine on Yamaha, it is only copies I have problem with. So I assume that the Yamaha player is OK.
2) I have yet to try different media (but this looks like the most likely reason for pausing, correct?)

Lastly do I or should I have to upgrade the firmware on my YamahaS520 player? Are their any consequences? And where to get update?
