i think i finally got it to work to encode the xvid to mpeg1. its an hour and half movie says it'll take tmpgen over 3 1/2 hours..(hey but at least the film is right side up today) if it encodes well as mpeg can i then burn that with windows media player so it'll play in my stand alone dvd player?(hope i dont have to then convert mpeg to something else)

Media Player is a player, not a authoring or burning program. If you do own a DVD burner, use this guide to burn your DVD.

Unfortunately its a thing we all have to deal with encoding does take a LONG time.

And no, you do not have to re-encode the mpeg back to anything else unless you want to. Most people have .AVI files (there prefered because they usually take up less space because they are compressed.)

But (s)VCD's and DVD's use mpeg's so you are okay with having it now, unless you want to make a DVD but have just made a VCD. Because DVD's have a higher bitrate you would need to encode the source file again into a higher bitrated mpeg.

The only way to improve this is to encode with a computer that has a fast processor. Movies need to be encoded frame by frame, most feature length movies can hold 100000+ frames. So it takes ages.

Im guessing your creating a VCD 'mpeg1' instead of a DVD, right ???
Like Tommyknocker said, windows media player is NOT an authoring program so will not be able to create a VCD.

Instead try VCDEasy, works great and only £13.00 for the registered version! go to the official site www.vcdeasy.org for more info.

Actually TMPGEnc is quite fast for what is does. I have used many others that have taken up to 5x the speed and the quality is the same, if not worse. Hopefully 3 hours and 30 minuites (mine takes that long as well) will be faster in the future, until then us TMPGEnc users are lucky

  6. CCE is much faster than TMPGenc (and I'm told Main Concept is as well). IMHO CCE does a much better job at MPEG2 encodes and TMPGenc does a better job for MPEG1 encodes (althought still much slower).

CCE basic and TMPGenc both cost about the same too. However, TMPGenc is more user friendly (CCE isn't that bad but it's different). CCE has no build in filters either, so I normally have to frameserve with AVISynth (some people use VDub).

However, given that TMPGenc is free for MPEG1 encodes.. well you just can not beat that
