Hi,
I saved a movie from digital camcorder to abode premiere made my modifications and saved the new movie using Microsoft DV AVI into an avi file. I can play the movie fine in media player. But when I try to open it in virtualdub or tmpgenc it gives me an error:
Couldnt locate decompressor for format dvsd
VirtualDub requires a Video for windows VFW compatible codec to decompress video.
Is this some kind of codec I must download? Which codec is needed?
thanks
Steve

First, see if you can load the video in Virtual Dub mod. Then see if the video is DV 1 or DV 2. DV 2 is friendlier towards TMPGEnc and VDub in my opinion.
Hello. -
You need a VFW (Video for Windows) DV codec. Download the free Panasonic one from the tools sections here (instructions included). Or buy the Mainconcept one.
-
That is correct. VirtualDub won't support the Microsoft DV directshow encoder and decoder filters. These filters are in a file called qdv.dll. I usually use the MainConcept or a modified version of the Canopus DV codec. Panasonic should work as well, though.

I have this problem also. So I installed the panasonic codec. The avi now loads into vdub, but I get a message that says there will be no audio. If I edit/cut the avi will the audio also be edited, even thugh I don't here audio in vdub?
-
Virtual Dub cannot read the audio of AVI type 1. It can read the audio of AVI type 2. (I think that is right, but there is a small chance I got the type numbers mixed up: the principle is the same.) You need to convert the AVI from type 1 to type 2. Canopus has a free utility (Canopus DV File Converter) that can do this, and there are probably others as well out there. Check the tools section. Note there is no loss of quality in the conversion, as nothing is being re-encoded.
Since converting from type 1 to type 2 takes time, in the future try to find a program that will output your AVI in the correct type when you capture (or check the settings for your current capture program). -
I tried the Canopus DV File Converter but i get a error box that says the whole file wasn't converted-don't delete the sorce file. When I try to open the converted file (which is not complete), VDUB says it can't identify the file type. I used the ulead studio version 5.0 to capture from the camera. I'll check through it to see if it does type 2. I didn't realize there were different .avi types.
Edit: ulead videostudio ver. 5.0 says it does type2. So I went into the templates and selected type2. But vdub says it is type1. -
You might try another AVI 1 to 2 converter. There are several listed in the "Tools" codecs section. I remember I had some problems converting long files the few times I had to do a type 1 to type 2 conversion.
The most important thing is finding a program that will output AVI that VirtualDub will accept, and apparently Ulead won't do that. But there are other capture/edit programs. -
Thanks, I'm trying a lot of things. I tried the DV type1 to type2 listed in the tools, that one finihed but when I play it the audio turns into loud static after about halfway through.
Is there a program that will edit avi type1? -
I think many payware editing programs will, but I don't know which ones because I only output and use type 2. I know that Windows Movie Maker (which is free) will, but it only runs on Windows XP. If you've got XP you might try it. Go to the Microsoft website and search around, or it might be listed in tools here.

Hello,
I had the same problem with Vdub. I actually used the sony decoder to get it to read. For the Convertion, I used uleads free one, and everything now works:
VD Capture (By the way Windows Movie Maker seems to capture in AVI 1).
Sony Codec for DV cameras (and Many others!) I have a TRV33 : http://dshow.narod.ru/codec.htm
Ulead Download for AVI1 -> AVI2 : http://www.ulead.com/download/dvconverter/download.htm (You must enter an e-mail, but they will not verify).
