I still don't know why anyone wants a menu for just the main movie.
If there is only one option, there is no need for a menu.

Kelso,
Excellent stuff. If I may, I would like to pick your brains on some options for creating the dummy files.
As mentioned they are just 1-2 second blank (black) clips. Creating them from scratch should not be to difficult. My question is if one has a blank mpeg clip, could IFOEdit (etal) be used to create the necessary dummy vobs and ifo's. In this way one could create placeholders for specially designed menus which could be used to overwrite the dummy files. Or in some unique conditions where one only has VOB files and need to generate special menus. Maybe this is just an off the wall idea and you really need to know sizes and offsets and the like.
Oh well, just an idea. The guide is still a good piece of work.

Sorry, didn;t read it properly
Is there anyway I could go about including one of the extras as well with this method? Its the 5min prelude in 2fast 2furious -
Kelso have you tried backing up "Signs"? For whatever reason I am having problems with this movie. It has a ton of extras which I deleted from the Shrink output folder and placed somewhere else on my hardrive after replacing the dummy files DVD X-Copy created.
When I use Nero to burn the files it says that one file is missing (which just happens to be an extra and not the movie nor the menu screen. When i go back and add that file it says that another one is missing. Sometimes depending on what file I remove it says the certain VOB files are not in correspondence with certain Ifo files.
What am i doing wrong? Could it be a mix-up on my part with replacing the dummy files x-copy created and copying them over to the Shrink folder or can it be that im deleting certain files from Shrink that i shoudn't or vice versa? Again, i check the files with Power DVD to make sure that im keeping the main movie (usually the files that read around 1,048,544kb) and the file named VTS which is the main menu. (That was another thing, in the Shrink folder, right when i think im ready to burn I have to files VTS something and another reading something like VTS_01_1.VOB that are both the main menu when I went to delete the latter and burn it said that the file was missing and needed even though the one reading VTS was the exact same thing.)
What can I do?
P.S. - your guide is great and i have been able to back-up other movies but this one is giving me problems. -
MackemX has posted some excellent dummy files and and a guide for replacement HERE
For further methods read :

Great guide, Kelso, but I have a question for you. I think someone up above asked it but I haven't seen an answer ...
DVDXCopy creates a bunch of dummy VOB, BUP, and IFO files - in your example, VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_ 01_0.IFO, VTS_01.0.VOB, VTS_01_1.VOB. Would it be possible to save these and use them for any movie, instead of having to run DVDXCopy for each movie, renaming if necessary if the extras are in a titleset other than 01? And then manually delete any VOBs that DVDShrink creates in the extras titleset beyond VTS_01_1 (eg, VTS_01_2.VOB), just like in your guide?
So say you did Apollo 13 today, and tomorrow you want to do, I don't know, Matrix or something. You could run DVDShrink on Matrix, as described in your guide, and then replace the relevant files in the shrunk extras titleset with the VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_ 01_0.IFO, VTS_01.0.VOB, VTS_01_1.VOB that you got from DVDXCopy in the process of doing Apollo 13. If the Matrix extras are in titleset 2 instead of 1, you would rename the files to VTS_02_0.BUP, VTS_02_0.IFO, etc.
Is there any reason why this wouldn't work? Is there a reason that the dummy files have to be "customized" to the particular movie? -
i havent tried this approach yet, but i do have a comment.
all you have to do to save your dvdxcopy files is when xcopy gets to
"insert blank disk" just hit ctrl/alt/delete and end program.
your files will still be there. that should cut out one step for you.
keep up the good work. its a very good" how to" -

Kelso,
I am a beginner but I see you know what you are talking about.
I also agree with someone who sayd … “I still don't know why anyone wants a menu for just the main movie.. If there is only one option, there is no need for a menu!”
I want to backup and split in 2 discs, keeping everything (movie, menus and extras), not compressed, from one original DVD and in a way that menu has full function.
The main movie has, of course, to be split and it seems to me that the second and biggest part of the movie may be the second disc.
If I am right, the first and smallest part of the movie as well as extras and menus should be in the first disc. I have tried it using DVD Shrink3.1 but, something is wrong in the way I am processing for the 1st disc.
I ask you or somebody who can help me on how to proceed.
Thanks a lot

Kelso,
I'm currently love your methods! Actually the only method I'm using to backup my DVDs collection for fullest quality with only Menu & Movie only and put Menu & extras, etc on disc 2 or discard disc 2 . At first I'm like a novice, but after awhile working around your method I'm sore of feel like an expert.
You're right, I also love DVD X Copy made those TINY (small) dummy files..no other software I know as of today able to preform this. I wish DVD X Copy future release will have the option for to browse on local Hard Drive saved files besides only from Disc Drive.
One thing I found is that you can copy the VIDEO_TS (video manager) file from the DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter ripped to replaced the watermark of DVD X Copy made file. And may use IfoEdit to modifier the movie directly to the menu on those movies that would take you through the unnesscessary warning, commercial etc..
Thanks for the discovery!

Kelso,
Thank you for the guide. i am net to this as well as DVDXCopy. I have the latest DVDXCopy but don't know how to get to the page where you first showed in your guide -- where DVDXcopy divide the movie into two discs. I would appreciate your help or anyone family with this.
Best,

Thank you for your information and for the link. That is awsome. I encoded a backup already using the guide from your link.
I have a quick question, the DVDShrink encoded file in my temp folder (the newly encoded movie just prior to burning onto the DVD), if I want to burn a second copy of this encoded movie, can I do it without having to re-encode the whole movie again? It takes a long time to do so.
Thanks,
John -

Jimmalenko,
Thanks again for the help.
When you said, "just burn the file(s) DVDShrink created again.", sorry for the basic question here, but how do you do it? Would you be kind enough to walk me through step by step? I know you pointed/linked me tho many helpful guides, but I didn't see where they show me to burn these 18 or so VTS folders. So again, without having to re-encode in DVDShrink, how do I burn these endoded folders?
Thank you for your patience,
John -
Jimmalenko,
Perhaps, I should have been more specific. Can I use DVDShrink to burn these DVDShrink encoded movie files that are saved on my HD or I have to use another software to do so? The other softwares I have are DVDDecrypter, DVDClone. I also have Nero, but been having many burn failures from Nero, so I gave that up. Its the 6.6 version and my firmware are up-to-date.
Thanks always,
John -

Jimmalenko,
Thanks for the prompt post. More question for you while I am reading the links.
When you asked, "Did you output to hard disk folders (a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directory) or did you create an ISO file ?"; sorry, I have no idea what I have created. Sorry, very new with these things. I basically followed the guide using DVDdecryptor, Vobblank, and then DVDShrink to encode and seleted my HD to store the encoded files. I looked in this folder and as stated earlier, I see lots of VTS and Video_TS folders. Now I assume these are not ISO files, correct? If yes, what do we call them. I don't remember seeing any AUDIO_TS folders.
Appreciate your patience,
John -
