  1. is progressive scan worth having? I have read in various places that progressive scan is worth it on a dvd player because it improves the display quality. I thought it depended on the tv, ie that has to be progressive scan capable too. This might make it onto my list of must have features for my next dvd player.

From what I understand, you do need a tv that supports progressive scan to notice the difference in picture quality. But I could be wrong.

yep. you'll need TV with prog-scan capability in order to reap the benefits of prog-scan player. The difference in picture quality is almost night and day. Even on a 27" TV.

I hear through the grapevine that HD Stand Alone DVD players will be here in the next year or two. Progressive is great...I have one, but don't spend to much money right now. Save your big bucks for the progressive+HD DVD players.

  6. The world of quailty video sure ain't cheap. But since I'm married with three little kids, we don't get out much. So the price of a HD compatible TV and Progressive Scan DVD player has been well worth the overtime shifts I did to pay for them

Trivia... on an electronics site they quoted that the pickup heads and electronics in a dvd player are now selling wholesale for $6.

  11. I got my Sony 725p DVD player for $250. its progressive scan enabled and plays most other format like vcd, svcd, mpg. the players themselves aren't bad anymore. its the HDTV that will get you pricewise

  12. Yes, I have a 65" progressive scan HDTV that looks impressive. With progressive scan, the screen is smooth, you see no horizontal lines as with non-progressive ones. Watching good movies like Pearl Harbor on it is like in a theater, everything looks crisp and clear.
