Please help me! I've a DVD burner Sony DW-U10A DVD+RW and I'm in the Zone 1 (Canada) NTSC. I want to get an DVD collection from France (Zone 2 PAL). Can I encode an DVD Zone 2 Pal to DVD Zone 1 NTSC with my computer and DVD burner? What software I can get? Thank you to help me!

That sure doesn't help change it from PAL to NTSC though, now does it?

P.S. The answer is... yes, but not even remotely EASILY. -
These two links have all the INFO you will need to do PAL to NTSC conversions.

The alternative is to buy a stand alone DVD player that is region free and can convert PAL to NTSC on-the-fly while playing back a PAL DVD to a NTSC television.
One of the best models is the Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 which can be bought direct from the Cyberhome website for $79.95 USD plus shipping. Despite the LOW price this baby really has the best realtime PAL to NTSC conversion out there. However it is not a "perfect" DVD player in that it doesn't handle SVCD all that well and it sometimes will have trouble with DVD-R discs and DVD+R discs etc. But for playing back original factory made DVD discs (be they NTSC or PAL) you simply can't beat the quality of the PAL to NTSC conversion.
For info on how to make the Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 region free etc. simply visit the message forums section of the Nerd-Out website. It is easy to make this player region free as all you need to use is a secret remote control "hack".
Either way ... Good Luck!

Thank you for your help.
Tommyknocker: DVD Shrink seem to be an good software but my DVD Burner/Player (SONY DW-U10B 4X) can read DVD Zone 2 PAL? If I want to rip it on my HD, what can I do? DVD Shrink can do all the work for me? DVD Shrink can really convert DVD Zone 2 PAL to DVD-r Zone 1 NTSC? Can you please just show me the steps you are using to do this?
FulciLives: I've verified your 2 links and it's appear to be very helpful! Especially "VI. PAL (Video) DVD (25i Fps) -> NTSC DVD (29.97i Fps)" in "StandardsConversion". But I've the same question, Can I read and rip an DVD Zone 2 Pal on my HD with my Sony DVD Burner/Player? I have to "crack" my DVD Burner/Player to do this? Because it's Zone 1.
The Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 seem to be a very good DVD player! But how to convert "on-the-fly" ? I have to set up the out put to PAL and plug it to my PC Capture Card? If I read a DVD Zone 2 PAL in this DVD player, my TV (JVC) will support PAL?
Thank you again for all!

DVD Shrink cannot convert PAL to NTSC all it can do is make it region free.Originally Posted by The-Chosen-One
Use DVD Decrypter in FILE mode to RIP the DVD to your HDD. This program will allow you to RIP any format/region DVD disc. So for instance ... if you have a REGION ONE DVD drive you can use it to RIP a REGION 2 DVD disc. You do not have to update the firmware of your DVD drive to make it region free. This makes DVD Decrypter a kick ass programOriginally Posted by The-Chosen-One
Anyways, the ripping process will remove any and all copy protection and make it region free (this is in FILE mode or ISO mode but for the PAL <---> NTSC conversion you will want to use FILE mode).
The Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 is a region free stand alone DVD player. It can play any DVD regardless of the region code and it will handle both PAL and NTSC. It will output PAL as PAL and NTSC as NTSC or you can set it up (very easy) to convert so it can output PAL as NTSC or you can output NTSC as PAL. This way you can use it with ANY TV even if the TV only supports one format.Originally Posted by The-Chosen-One

to change pal to ntsc you have to encode the hole video again. TMPG or CCE. Most DVD player's will play pal it's that they wont play region's if you dvd player will play pal just make it region free and the DVD player will chanhe pal to ntsc.

I don't know where you are from but here in the USA there are VERY few DVD players that can do PAL to NTSC. Also multi-system format televisions are mostly unheard of here in the USA.Originally Posted by spiderman2k1
In short ... most USA model DVD players will NOT play back PAL format DVD discs even if the disc is region free. If the DVD player is capable of playing it back then usually (at best) it will output PAL which will not work with a standard USA model NTSC television.
In the UK and other European countries it seems more common (from what I've read) to have television that can handle NTSC or at least the "fake" form of NTSC (I think it is called PAL 60 or something like that) than some (most?) VHS/DVD players can output. Such is not the case in the USA and I wouldn't be overly surprised if CANADA is in the same boat.

P.S.
There are stand alone DVD players in the USA that can play back any region coded DVD and do PAL to NTSC but that is far from the NORM here in the USA"The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Lots of DVD players play PAL out to an NTSC TV here in the USA.
The catch is that most do it VERY POORLY.

- Gurm -
Not only do most do it very poorly but you have to admit that there are very few "mainstream" ... as in brand name ... DVD players that do this. The only one is JVC which actually does a pretty decent job but you have to buy it pre-modified or you are stuck watching region free only eventhough a normal USA model JVC will do PAL to NTSC right out of the box it will not play a region 2 DVD etc.Originally Posted by Gurm
In my own experiences with several players and from what I read on the 'net I'm convinced that nothing works better than the Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 for doing PAL to NTSC conversions.
Of course you actually can get BETTER QUALITY conversions doing a re-encode method on a computer and end up with a real NTSC DVD-R in the end but I do admit that it takes a LONG time and not the best method if you have a lot of PAL DVD discs but only a NTSC TV.
I still convert some PAL to NTSC on the computer but I also have a Cyberhome CH-DVD 500

Listen people,
Buy an allformat/allregion DVD player and forget about these things!
Enjoy! -

I'm personally picking up, next time the budget allows (read: right after financing a house and paying for the kid to go to college), a Liteon DVD player. I've heard good things about their PAL->NTSC output.
- Gurm -
well I like Pioneer (454k)... it eats both PAL and NTSC...
-
Oh, everything else in my machine that takes a disc is Lite-on.
Well, ok not the Plextor DVD burner. But I'll likely pick up a Liteon multi-format in the next year.

Is there anyway of doing a PAL to NTSC conversion by just changing the frame rate from 25 to 24 (23.976) and shrinking the audio. Making a kind of DVD NTSC (Film)? And would this work in reverse?
Jukka -
Nope, you've got to ditch 100 lines of resolution too, while you're at it... and change the way in which the colour / color information is relayed...
As mentioned before, it's not easy, and that's why standards convertors are often so damned expensive.
