DV Capture out of Sync

Okay...I'm typing this for the 2nd time, so forgive me if I get to the point!

I'm attempting to transfering my dozen mini-DV home movie tapes over to DVD. Using Studio 8.8, I'm capturing without scene detection, and just adding a simple DVD menu and chapter marks. I'm then burning using Studio's encoder and DVD burner. Have found that my 1 hour DVD's are out of sync by about 1 second or so by the end. Even the avi file that Studio puts out has the same problem!

I'm using a P4 2.53GHz, 512MB, Firewire, 200GB dedicated capture drive. I've experienced no dropped frames (well, okay, zero on one tape, 2 on another, and 21 on the third).

What do I do? I'm open to other applications if this is one of many of Studio's issues. What should I be using to get my DV into my PC?

I'm ready to hook my camcorder up to my Hauppauge PVR-250 analog in and capture, as I've had success in keeping DVD's in sync if I create them with TMPGENC DVD Author.

I would try a different encoder such as TMPGEnc. The DV avi file sometimes seems out of sync because of interlacing but it might not be.

If the original DV is in sync, copying it via firewire would keep it in sync. If that PS (pinical studio) software lets you use its firewire port with other sw, I'd try to capture via fire wire using a small tool like DVIO or winDV. Then check them out in virtualDub to see if they are in sync, and pick it up in your sw from there.

I've done the following to make DVD from minDV
- Capture using winDV
- Pick the clips I want (play them in VDub)
- join them in an avs script
- encode to mpeg using mainconcept
- author with maestro

This takes me about 2x the length of the movie (as long as I don't futz around with the menu too much)

PS: I don't know if anyone has ever made it thru an hour of my miniDV footage. Maybe there is a problem at the end

BTW: DV specs do not require audio to be locked in sync with video. I believe this gives people problems if they do a lengthy passthru vcr-->dvcam-->pc. I would not think that this is your problem.

I had the same trouble. The problem I had was that Pinnacle Studio 8 only captures and handles Type 2 DV avi and apparently that is incompatible with my sony digital8 camera (TRV-740). I was able to successfully capture hours of DV using the WinDV tool and capturing in Type 1 DV (WinDV is a very handly piece of freeware that allows you to specify which type of DV you wish to capture and it can be found in the tools section of this site). I never heard of out-of-sync problem with capturing from DV camcorder through FireWire port with Pinnacle Studio version 8 . (it doesn't mena that it does not exist) Is that what tou are doing ? DV capturing is just like "file copy". Do you still have that issue ?

If you're certain that your AVI is in sync, then it's probably in the encoding process. As yg1968 suggested, try TMPGENC....however, I doubt if interlacing has anything to do with your problem.
