  1. I hope this is the right forum. I finally received a new ADVC-100 from Canopus so satelite dish to DV capture is working again.

I am looking for software suggestions on a complete package for capture, minor editing and then storing onto a DVD in file format. I have ULead's VideoStudeo 6 but it has few option for the final storage format. I do not want any loss of quality and storing in 720x480 is just a little overkill that results in too large a file. I think the satelite source is about 580x480. Ulead does not allow me to store in the resolution that I want or offer quality/speed in rendering.

Any suggestions on what software to look at? Is there a comparison somewhere?

    Thanks much

    Any questions?

  3. This is in response to the post above. Yes, I discovered that Custom setting too. I have done some trial work with MPEG at 640x480 which is a 4:3 ratio and a variable bit rate of 2000. The picture quality is excellent with half the storage space.

Has anyone experimented with other settings and other formats from mpeg2?

I keep trying to download the trial of Ulead's Video Studio but it always stops halfway through the download. Any ideas why?

How does UL VS 7 compare to 6?

    Thanks much.

If you intend to put these videos on DVD
    you must use one of
    720 x 480
    704 x 480
    352 x 480
    352 x 240

    Otherwise
It has been said that MPEG4 is the most efficient compression so far

  5. I plan to capture to a file that I can write onto a DVD. ULead offers MPEG-2 640x480 (4:3) variable 2000 kbps. I am able to capture 135 minures of video in 2.1 GB with no loss of quality from my satellite movies. This would allow me to write 2 movies on a DVD.

Sorry, FOO. He uses Video Studio. It does not matter what he captures at, he will be able to make a DVD with it. VS does all the conversion for him.
    Hello.

  8. Ulead VS looks very good but it appears that the Canopus ADVC-100 captures the overscan as well and this needs to be cropped. I see no way to do this in Ulead VS6.

If the final product is TV, overscan disappears. Or, you can also put a thin black line on the Overlay track to cover your overscan. And you can also try the Ulead framserver trial program to see if you want TMPGEnc to crop your video that comes out of Video Studio.

  10. The way I like to do it is use Dazzle 2 capture CBR 956000 then edit with mpeg2vcd then author the DVD most of the time the dvd is over 8 gig's use a trancoder CLONEDVD or IC7 video come's out great. Best thing Dazzle 2 has a timer for it www.dazzlegeek.com

  11. Anyone know anything about Vegas Movie Studio? It is the same price as ULead and seems to have more features including cropping. Unfortunately I do not see a trial download.

I still can't download the trial of UL VS7. Always stops just short of 50MB.
I don't know how these companies expect to sell their software if they do not offer a trial download???

I have tried all 3 links about a dozen times. The download always stops at 48 MB (out of 75). I am interested in this program as well as the equally priced VEGAS product. The new release looks like it has more features but they do not offer a trial to impossible to evaluate.

  14. I believe I understand the overscan problem now. The dark areas are just on the sides. Since the ADVC-100 captures at 720x480 and the TV is 640x480 (4:3 aspect ratio), I believe this is the overscan area.
